The Circle, by Dave Eggers

The Circle is the exhilarating new novel from Dave Eggers, best-selling author ofA Hologram for the King,a finalist for the National Book Award.

When Mae Holland is hired to work for the Circle, the world’s most powerful internet company, she feels she’s been given the opportunity of a lifetime. The Circle, run out of a sprawling California campus, links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency. As Mae tours the open-plan office spaces, the towering glass dining facilities, the cozy dorms for those who spend nights at work, she is thrilled with the company’s modernity and activity. There are parties that last through the night, there are famous musicians playing on the lawn, there are athletic activities and clubs and brunches, and even an aquarium of rare fish retrieved from the Marianas Trench by the CEO. Mae can’t believe her luck, her great fortune to work for the most influential company in the world—even as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at the Circle becomes increasingly public. What begins as the captivating story of one woman’s ambition and idealism soon becomes a heart-racing novel of suspense, raising questions about memory, history, privacy, democracy, and the limits of human knowledge.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of the Month, October 2013: As a fiction writer, indie publishing icon and education activist Dave Eggers neither suffers fools gladly nor treads lightly. With his signature mix of intelligence and highly literate snark, he dives headlong into contemporary crises--Hurricane Katrina, the Sudanese civil war--through the lens of a single character whose perspective we get to know intimately. In his new novel, Eggers tackles a modern problem that doesn't always seem like one: our near constant hunger for communication. When Mae Holland takes a job at the Circle, a tech giant with a utopian culture and cultlike following (Eggers didn't call it Schmoogle, but may as well have), she quickly loses sight of her friends, family, and sense of self in favor of professional success and social acceptance. As her Circle star rises, Mae succumbs to the corporate code of full disclosure, eventually agreeing to "go transparent" and let the public watch--and comment on--her every move. "Privacy is theft," decrees the company motto; "Secrets are lies." It's not subtle, but neither were "Harrison Bergeron" and 1984, and in its best moments The Circle is equally terrifying. Let's just hope it's not prescient. --Mia Lipman

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Most of us imagine totalitarianism as something imposed upon us—but what if we’re complicit in our own oppression? That’s the scenario in Eggers’ ambitious, terrifying, and eerily plausible new novel. When Mae gets a job at the Circle, a Bay Area tech company that’s cornered the world market on social media and e-commerce, she’s elated, and not just because of the platinum health-care package. The gleaming campus is a wonder, and it seems as though there isn’t anything the company can’t do (and won’t try). But she soon learns that participation in social media is mandatory, not voluntary, and that could soon apply to the general population as well. For a monopoly, it’s a short step from sharing to surveillance, to a world without privacy. This isn’t a perfect book—the good guys lecture true-believer Mae, and a key metaphor is laboriously explained—but it’s brave and important and will draw comparisons to Brave New World and 1984. Eggers brilliantly depicts the Internet binges, torrents of information, and endless loops of feedback that increasingly characterize modern life. But perhaps most chilling of all is his notion that our ultimate undoing could be something so petty as our desperate desire for affirmation. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Eggers’ reputation as a novelist continues to grow. Expect this title to be talked about, as it has an announced first printing of 200,000 and the New York Times Magazine has first serial rights. --Keir Graff

From Bookforum
Social media is easily lampooned, which makes this low-hanging fruit for a writer of Eggers's talent […] The satire here is often thin and fatiguing, or even unnecessary. […] This novel is not so much about what the tech world is like--it's about what we are like, what we do with technology, and where we very well might be headed. —Fiona Maazel

Secrets are Lies, Privacy is Theft
By Gary Schroeder
The Circle is Dave Eggers’ response to what’s happening to us all: the fundamental transformation of human society created by perpetual electronic connectedness. Surely you’ve felt it. I know I have...and I’m glad that a major novelist like Eggers has taken it on. Someone needs to.

Eggers wraps his criticism of this phenomenon around a company called The Circle, a thinly disguised version of Google. We experience the inner workings of The Circle through our protagonist Mae who has landed her dream job of being a “Circler,” one of the most coveted and hippest jobs that a young 20-something could hope for.

The Circle is, from the outset, a creepy sort of insulated company in which every possible need of the Circlers (almost all of whom are under 30) is provided for: on site parties headlined by notable performers, clothing stores stocking the latest products, residences and more. Circlers need never leave the campus (and why would they want to? Surely there could be no more exciting place in the world to be). Oh, one catch: make sure to always be participating in the company’s social media at all times; a failure to participate might indicate that you’re not a team player or worse....you might be antisocial. One thing the Circle cannot abide is a lack of complete participation at all times.

Mae quickly adapts to the ways of the Circle, easily embracing each new layer of required transparency and tracking. As a young person with nothing to hide, she can’t see any inherent difficulties in this prospect. Why wouldn’t you want to share as much as possible with everyone? Sharing--in the words of one of the Circle’s founders--is caring. Keeping information to yourself is actually an act of theft. Each piece of information you hide robs someone somewhere of the opportunity to benefit from your knowledge.

The Circle is always debuting new technological marvels, each released to the public in a way that will be familiar to most readers: the dramatic Steve Jobs-style personal product reveal. The applause is always thunderous. Crowds can never get their hands on the new product fast enough. Each new product is pitched as the obvious solution to a pressing problem...child abductions, home violence, neighborhood crime. And on the surface, they are, but there’s always the flip side; each a fresh incursion into privacy, a further reduction in the amount of public space in which people can hide.

Eggers introduces Mae’s ex-boyfriend Mercer as a foil to her unbridled enthusiasm for the works of the The Circle. He’s one of the only characters in the novel to ask questions, to object to this blind worship of technology and electronic monitoring. There are so many turns at which a normal person would be horrified at the prospect of The Circle’s growing power but Eggers allows only one or two characters to ever voice concern. He’s chosen instead to present the view through the eyes of the techno-faithful, showing how acceptance of such privacy incursions could be not only accepted but actively embraced. This point of view is all the more chilling. Mae’s view and that of her fellow Circlers is the perspective of youth and inexperience. They’re exhilarated to be a part of something so dramatically transformative. Their generation will put the world’s ills right. Finally human beings have the tools to fix their world’s shortcomings and they are the carriers of light.

Of course, The Circle is a dystopian novel. Like all such novels it does its best to hold a dark mirror up to present circumstances and encourage the reader to think about what they see. It is ham-handed in places and I occasionally felt like I was being beaten over the head with the message, but then again some of its more outrageous exaggerations of online culture are not really that far off the mark. We do live in a world full of techno-profits who promise to eradicate the ills of society through the aggregation of data...ever growing avalanches of data, what we eat, when we eat it, where we’ve been, what we’ve seen, what we purchase, who we know and what we think.

Eggers shouts at us to step back, take a breath and ask “what have we done?”.

Do you really want to be on twenty four/seven? If yes, welcome to the Circle Community!
By LTCL
This is a little close to home for me since my daughter works for a social media mega company but I did think Dave Eggers spin on what social media could do to/for the world is interesting and a bit of a scary read. Mae starts her career after college with the help from a friend, Annie who is going places at a Silicon Valley mega social media corporation. The Circle seems harmless enough and has some really great perks - ice cream, state of the art workout facilities, fine dining and living quarters. Soon she finds herself surrounded by events she is "required" to attend and post online to bump her ratings in the Circle community. "Sharing is Caring" is one of the company's mottoes and as Mae soon discovers, her popularity and place in the company is slipping due to her perceived lack of interest in sharing every aspect of her day with the world. The Circle begins new programs to track and pry into every part of the world's life and soon some around her begin to rebel. Her family and old friends will have trouble dealing with this obsession Mae has with her job. There is also a mystery man who could turn out to be the best thing for her or get her fired. All is not what it seems within the company. Is it the beginning of a perfect world for all or will it be closer to George Orwell's "1984". "The Circle" will be enjoyed (or feared) by those just about to enter the job market, already in up to their neck or those that fear social media in general. As I turn to hit the button that will send this review to various social media, I am already thinking differently about all my smart devices and behavior.

1. If a social media corporation were to achieve a complete monopoly of all public and private information, we'd be in danger of becoming a totalitarian society.

2. People often willingly give up their privacy for convenience, societal benefit, or a needy and self-centered desire for affirmation.

If these premises seem facile to you, you might not enjoy Dave Egger's new novel, the Circle.

The writing is straight, mainstream, third-person limited narration. You won't find any of the layered themes, complex metaphor, formal experimentalism, stylistic prose or psychological lyricism common in modern literary fiction. Whether you'll consider this a bug or a feature is mainly a matter of taste; but it's worth mentioning, given Eggers' McSweeney's pedigree (this is the first book I've read by Eggers, so I wasn't sure what to expect).

The protagonist is Mae Holland, an enthusiastic, naive and downright submissive young woman (surprise) who gets a job in customer service at the Circle, a company which, having subsumed Google, Facebook and Twitter, is on the brink of achieving the complete monopoly mentioned above. Mae does not think deeply or critically about anything that happens to her, and her motivations are often inexplicable. These are qualities that serve Eggers' narrative goals more effectively than they do the reader's enjoyment.

Eggers' goals seem to ride directly on the surface of the narrative. Almost every scene reads like a mini-lesson on the deceptive utopianism of the huge dot-coms, the superficiality and false emotional appeal of online "sharing", or the creepiness of voluntary corporate surveillance. Many passages set the narrative baggage mostly aside and are rendered either as polemic dialogues or speeches delivered by one of the characters. There are also many product presentations, designed to bring the creepiness into maximum relief. There's also a little sex and a lot of longing for a man.

In an interview, Eggers stated (seemingly with with pride) that he did not research technology or technology companies to write the book. The result is a skewed, pop-cultural vision of the corporate campus (few developers are to be seen, and no one is depicted actually writing code); a cartoonish start-up culture that doesn't mine into the strangeness that can be found in memoirs on the subject; and a few truly wince-inducing concepts about computer technology ("the cloud", for example, somehow does not require physical storage).

The lack of focus on the way technology actually works and the way software companies actually think is not a criticism in itself. But it leads to a lack of engagement with the truly complicated moral, social and political issues that arise with online privacy, over-sharing and corporate ethics. The treatment of these issues in the Circle is simplistic and one-sided. And there is little to be found *aside from* the treatment of these issues.

Beyond the transparent preachiness, the most disappointing part of the Circle, for me, was Mae herself. Although Eggers sometimes beautifully documents her thoughts (especially her rationalizations and distorted perceptions of others), she is, at bottom, not much more than a vehicle for what Eggers wants to say. There is no real fight - from Mae, the public or the government - against what the Circle is trying to do. If I should rightly be afraid that a company like the Circle will drive us all off a cliff, I'd be better-served by a novel in which the author doesn't simply hand them the keys.

A Useless Man: Selected Stories, by Sait Faik Abasiyanik

Sait Faik Abasiyanik was born in Adapazari in 1906 and died of cirrhosis in Istanbul in 1954. He wrote twelve books of short stories, two novels, and a book of poetry. His stories celebrate the natural world and trace the plight of iconic characters in society: ancient coffeehouse proprietors and priests, dream-addled fishermen adn poets of the Princes' Isles, lovers and wandering minstrels of another time. Many stories are loosely autobiographical and deal with Sait Faik's frustration with social convention, the relentless pace of westernization, and the slow but steady ethnic cleansing of his city. His fluid, limpid surfaces might seem to be in keeping with the restrictions that the architects of the new Republic placed on language and culture, but the truth lies in their dark, subversive undercurrents.

Sait Faik donated his estate to the Daruşafaka foundation for orphans, and this foundation has since been committed to promoting his work. His former family home on Burgazada was recently restored, and now functions as a museum honoring his life and work. He is still greatly revered: Turkey's most prestigious short story award carries his name and nearly every Turk knows by heart a line or a story by Sait Faik.

Review
"Sait Faik’s best stories combine...innocence with a profound intelligence, showing that people also bring sadness, disappointment, rivalry, frustration and confusion. He should certainly be better known among English readers and this volume is a good place to start...His work is full of humanistic portrayals of laborers, fishermen, children, tradesmen, the unemployed, the poor...one of the best loved writers in Turkey."—William Armstrong,Hrriyet Daily News

"Part of the charm of Sait Faik Abasiyanik, who wrote almost 200 short stories in two decades before his premature death in 1954, is the way he floated above the fray of his turbulent times. This new selection of tales is welcome.... His stories bear multiple readings... they are elliptical, fragmentary, defined mostly by what is left unsaid; they never outstay their welcome....'The Silk Handkerchief' [is] a poignant masterpiece of concision." — The Times Literary Supplement

"It's heartbreaking and tender.... Masterly storytelling, beautifully translated." — The Irish Times

"[S]uperbly translated. . . evocative and nostalgic without ever being saccharine. . . Like quality chocolates, each story is worth pausing over to savor the nuances, wondering about the hints and where they lead. . . Elliptical and unexpected, sometimes lyrical, sometimes earthy, using elementary language and a stark, Chekhovian simplicity, these loving tributes to the unnoticed loners on the margins of life reveal the world through Sait Faik's eyes in all its brutality and loneliness and beauty." --Nick DiMartino, University Book Store, in Shelf Awareness

"This fascinating collection of short stories from Turkey portray a world of the ordinary and mundane but in such a way as to stimulate the reader's imagination and leave them wanting more. Each story is like a snapshot in time and the evocative description and slightly mysterious subject matter leaves behind a sense that we have scratched the surface of a vast and private world that we can only ever experience through reading... these stories inspire, amuse and move in equal measure... this is a privileged glimpse into lives unknown and worlds rarely visited. Wonderful." — Booktrust

"Abasıyanık’s status as a Turkish national treasure is utterly unsurprising. Chekhov-like in his ability to create sweet, poignant moments from the mundane and melancholy, Abasıyanık is able to fashion even a mother’s death into a comforting embrace... Abasıyanık’s prose is never heavy-handed, as he expertly invokes the colours, smells and tastes of his native Turkey." — Totally Dublin

"These are stories that are not so much unputdownable as unpindownable. Briefer and more open-ended than Chekhov, earthier than Borges and Kafka, less penetrating than Katherine Mansfield and D H Lawrence – yet as beguiling as all of them...It isn’t always easy to get a handle on these stories, but it is not difficult at all to be lulled and entranced by their strangeness." — The National(UAE)

"...beautifully paced and glows with affection for thesights and sounds of working class Istanbul... one of Turkey’s most revered writers...Engrossing and curiouslyrefreshing, Sait Faikopens magical doorsto Istanbul as it stood back in the early twentieth century, with its colourful array of prostitutes, barflys and musicianswho frequentedits coffeeand tea houses and drinkingdens." — RT Ten (Ireland)

"[S]ince I have come into possession of Abasiyanik’sStories, I have found myself pursuing loosely structured goals in the region just as an excuse to hop on a train and dive into another succinct tale...Like Robert Walser’s walking stories, these meditations on natural beauty and village life often dance around an ugly truth. Lost innocence, unrequited love, misanthropy. Turn down the wrong street and there they are, crystallized in the form of vegetables left out to dry in the cornice of a building. And the more beguiling and bucolic the tales start out, the less prepared we are when, in the words of translators Maureen Freely and Alexander Dawe, 'he pulls the carpet out from underneath our feet... [L]est we indulge in false nostalgia for an innocence that we may never have had to lose in the first place, we are reminded of the man who could not and would not go into town. 'I can imagine it now, all those little twenty-five watt bulbs glowing, and all the flies.' Perhaps this is reason enough not to go into town. But if you must, make sure to bring along Abasiyanik’sSelected Storiesfor the trip." — Nomadic Press

"These stories unfold like secrets or hallowed gossip passed between friends and neighbors. Each one’s telling--intimate and mysterious, earthy and luminous—is propelled universal by a striking glimpse of the human heart.Set in post-Ottoman Istanbul, Sait Faik’s characters span a rich cultural and linguistic array, including Turkish fisherman (and their fish), Greek Orthodox priests, factory girls, thieves, simit sellers and all manner of lovers. The stories take us to a specific place and time, but because of Sait Faik’s unflinching eye, we land precisely in our own backyard." — Anne Germanacos, author of In the Time of the Girlsand Tribute

"Reading these stories by Sait Faikfeels like finding the secret doors inside of poems. Little moments–here one about milk, there one about death–open out into corridors of narrative, leading to effects and endings that are consistently both gentle and cutting, simultaneously honest and surprising. A distinctive, humane voice worthy of our serious attention." —Rivka Galchen

About the Author
Sait Faik's career marked a fascinating moment in Turkish culture in the 1930s and 40s when the secular, post-Ottoman sensibility placed new demands on the writing of literature. Turkish critics and readers regard him as their finest short story writer, a Turkish Chekhov. While Sait Faik was a talented poet, he preferred the mode of fiction, and his intuitive sense for poetry pervades his stories. Like Chekhov, Sait Faik's characters come to life on the page--we meet Armenian fishermen, Greek Orthodox priests, and the disillusioned and disenfranchised, their complicated emotions, thoughts, and conditions, without ever compromising the full range of their humanity.

A picture of Turkish life, in storie
By Susan Drees
(Being reviewed as Selected Stories of Sait Faik Abasiyanik)
I have finished the final story of this collection today and find myself smiling and making notes about the writing on my kindle. The book, author and stories have all grown on me over the course of reading, as I have come to know him a little through his works, his views of his surroundings and his life, the culture which he apparently loved. There was a description I found in the afterword that I feel is especially important for the reader who does not know Turkey and has never encountered Sait Falk before. (Apparently he is somewhat of a folk hero in his own land and is still revered so long after his death.)

Though his stories are often opaque, fragmentary
and oddly plotted, they never fail to conjure up a
mood that lingers in your mind for days. They are
fleeting meditations, blurred pictures full of explosive
creativity; intimate portraits, odes to beloved
individuals or avatars...; slices of everyday life, a
casual remembrance, a crystallized childhood memory,
a veiled and deeply personal confession. [He}..depicted
the lives of lovers, deviants, idlers and the working
class: fishermen, builders, off-the-wall philosophers,
penniless widows, lost souls pocketing dreams in old
countryside coffeehouses. (loc 2411)

Among my favorite stories are several of his later ones, "The Boy in the Tnel", "Kalinikta", and "In the Rain". but there are whole or partial poems that captured me throughout with their sadness, the beauty of a quickly created scene among the islands, the silliness of a dog or the playing of children. Even in those stories, however, there is almost always a background of sadness, some nostalgia for other times, a feeling of loss already experienced or sure to come.

I was initially hesitant about these stories but came to see their power as I continued reading. The only thing I would do differently as a publisher is change the afterword to a forword for the benefit of those who are new to Turkish writing and to this author. I think it would give a well deserved hint before beginning the collection.

A copy of this book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley in return for an honest review.

I also note that a future edition of this book is being published with a slightly different title, [book:A Useless Man: Selected Stories|24474355].

LLC simple
By A Customer
I recently bought this book and found it to be very informative and to the point. I looked at other books, but most were wordy. My time is limited and I needed a book that would provide me the info without the fluff. There is a good state information section that provides info like Addresses, URLs, Legal URLs, Name Requirements, and form descriptions. The actual forms are not provided but the resource is given. I would recommend this book for someone looking for enough information to answer your questions and give you guidance in going forward.

Very informative
By fbolt
This book breaks what you need to know to form an LLC down nicely and easily by chapter. You can skip around if you'd like, but I wanted to make sure I knew everything about the topic and read it straight through. Full of helpful examples to illustrate the concepts just presented. Definitely recommend to others looking to learn about corporate structures and most specifically, the LLC.

Not "All You Need To Know"
By FD
I was hoping to be able to set up the LCC with this book, but apparently I needed to get the "How to Form an LLC" book (which I'm NOT going to do).

I've read the Nolo California Corporations book and it already covered much of the info here. What I was looking for was help with writing good articles of organization and operating agreement (specifically for a 1-person LLC).

The operating agreement example he gives is not specific to a one-person firm. A prudent person might change the language in his example operating agreement to reflect that the LLC is composed of just one person. Also, the book does not cover the fact that in CA you can specify additional info in the Articles, such as rules for admitting new members.

Awfully light for "All you need to know".

I am SO happy I ordered this
By Cj
I am SO happy I ordered this! I have had a really hard time finding good blackwork books, and this one is my new favorite. I personally look for black work fill-ins and borders, as I like to make my own pieces. This book has plenty of finished designs you can use, but also tons of material I can use for making my own. It's definitely the largest collection of black work patterns I've found in one place so far, and the book itself is so nicely put together. Super happy and a must have for blackwork lovers! Note: this book would be fine for a first timer or a seasoned stitcher.

Capitalism and Freedom: Fortieth Anniversary Edition, by Milton Friedman

Selected by the Times Literary Supplement as one of the "hundred most influential books since the war"

How can we benefit from the promise of government while avoiding the threat it poses to individual freedom? From the Inside Flap
Selected by the Times Literary Supplement as one of the "hundred most influential books since the war"

How can we benefit from the promise of government while avoiding the threat it poses to individual freedom? In this classic book, Milton Friedman provides the definitive statement of his immensely influential economic philosophy—one in which competitive capitalism serves as both a device for achieving economic freedom and a necessary condition for political freedom. The result is an accessible text that has sold well over half a million copies in English, has been translated into eighteen languages, and shows every sign of becoming more and more influential as time goes on.

A polemic on philosophers of both economics and political philosophy that fail to accept the "real world"
By Charles B.
This is a fairly dense book. In the sense that if you don't know some of the basic key economic concepts and philosophers that Friedman references, then you will be totally lost and have to re-read full chapters to get the ideas. It took me a month to work through this book, basically having to re-read whole chapters because some of the explanations that Friedman uses get confusing as be jumps around. That said, to me in reading this and thinking about it; the book is probably misunderstood by most of the general public that attempts to read this. It appears that Freidman presents a libertarian ideals of how the economy could run and that a capitalistic economic theory. At the same time he shows how the Keynesian, Engles/Marx philosophy can't work in some of their ideas because the empirical data from both history that they can't work. Then also explains how some of the ideas that are popular in both the Keynesian and Marx economic philosophy can't work when applied to the logical end since they would violate other portions of those related to basic economic philosophy and just the general idea of other economic principles such as basic ideas of Monetary Policy or Fiscal Policy. When viewed thru this idea, then this book is an interesting philosophy book about both political concepts, economic theories and showing that if we even apply some basic logic of philosophy concepts from Plato or Kant or similar. To me once I took this idea on that what Friedman is doing, at least in my mind, he is presenting is not only a polemic on Keynesian and Marx economic theory; but also on most all economic theories and philosophies as a whole. Since, as he states numerous times in most of the chapters, that these theories are idealized and perfect worlds. Rather than the history has shown constantly and as he reviewed the data with his students, that theory was nice until it hit harsh reality. In that sense this book should be idealized as an economic or political treatise as some put it. Rather it should be viewed as a harsh attack on the philosophers who are unwilling to view reality as it actually happens and properly interpret the human condition on their philosophies. As well as those that try and hand wave away those questions from folks with the "What about ... when ... happens?" sort of concerns. When I re-read some of the chapters later after viewing what I have interpreted Friedman's theme, then some of his explanations and concepts became a little clearer and even he showed that they weren't perfect, but it would be an interesting thought experiment if they were tried.

CLASSIC ECONOMICS, FRIEDMAN'S BEST
By Denis Benchimol Minev
Milton Friedman is one fo the strongest proponents of freedom in society as the only way towards development (a concept later expanded by Amartya Sen). This book is not an economics textbook, since he does not spend much time on the basic concepts of economics such as price theory. He assumes a bit of knowledge and uses it to make the case for many different economic ideas ranging from macroeconomics (monetarism) to microeconomics (school vouchers).

For a book that was written in the 60s, it is amazing how current his ideas remain. It is perhaps the most important book on the libertarian philosophy, focusing on preventing the accumulation of power by any individual or group of individuals in society.

Overall, it is a great read for someone familiar with economics and social sciences, it will definitely expand your horizons of thought. However, if you are looking for an introduction to interesting eocnomic ideas, I would suggest you read Free to Choose, which Friedman wrote a dozen years later to reach a more general audience.

If you like listening to a robot...
By A. Vily
I purchased this in hopes that I would listen to this during my long commutes but the sound quality was very poor and narrator was very disappointing and sounded so robotic. I do not recommend this at all as you will likely fall asleep while listening to this.
