Mind Boggling

This book had two reviewers before me, one is unintelligible and the other admits that they haven't read the book. I have read it and it's implications are mind boggling. Usually books that deal with related subjects are written by crack-pots and people who don't fully understand the science they write about. Professor Burr was E. K. Hunt Professor of Anatomy at Yale University School of Medicine so he was as main stream as you can get. And, you can rest assured that he understood the science and implications behind his research.

Briefly speaking Dr. Burr discovered that every living thing generates an electro-dynamic field that serves as a matrix directing it's growth. He called these living fields "L-fields". The L-field maintains the arrangement of whatever material is within it, no matter how often that material changes. L-fields determine the shape, and are determined by the body generating them.

Dr. Burr wrote: "The following theory may then be formulated. The pattern or organization of any biological system is established by a complex electro-dynamic field which is in part determined by it's atomic physio-chemical components and which in part determines the behavior and orientation of those components. This field is electrical in the physical sense and by it's properties relates the entities of the biological system in a characteristic pattern and is itself, in part,a result of the existence of those entities. It determines and is determined by the components.

More than establishing pattern, it must maintain pattern in the midst of a physio-chemical flux. Therefore, it must regulate and control living things. It must be the mechanism, the outcome of whose activity is wholeness, organization, and continuity."

Dr. Burr found that a study of L-fields could predict growth and dis-ease in a body. He worked with, what some call, "the energy body" to predict the growth and disease of the physical body. This means we are susceptible to the ebb and flow of electromagnetic fields in the rest of the universe. This was discovered by a main-stream scientist!! Since him not many main-stream scientists have touched this research even though it's implications could completely change our world view!

Usually one has to read a book about, what the Chinese call 'Chi'; the Japanese 'Ki' and the Indians 'Prana', to get a taste of where Dr. Burrs research can take us. Unfortunately, such works usually contain so much pseudo-science and Eastern philosophy that one easily gets lost in it.

If you want the real science behind all this...read Dr. Burrs book. It will boggle your mind!!

I have not yet read this book, but in the absence of any other reviews, I should point out that it is a classic frequently referred to in many other books on energy medicine. Burr was a professor at Yale who did experiments in the 1970s and was able to detect electrical fields around plants and animals, which he called the "l-field" or "life field." This book appears to be a summary of his findings and their implications, written for the lay person, followed by the technical results of his experiments for those who may wish to read his methodology for himself and possibly repeat it.

Very well done; fills the need for a textbook

I am somewhat astonished at the negative reviews, and must strongly disagree with the rather random issues from reviewers.

I have taught a course in consciousness at the undergraduate level a number of times, and the topic has been of longstanding interest. To be very clear: there is no text comparable to this. Prior to her first edition (2005), the only option was to collect primary readings and book chapters.

Blackmore does a *great* job pointing out the fundamental issues with consciousness without being too dry or clinical about it. She also describes well the major players in philosophy, psychology, etc. She herself is well integrated into the research and has a keen skeptical mind -- she gives fair treatment to all the right modern viewpoints.

If you want a general overview of the topic of consciousness, this is an excellent text to have. The topic draws many, many different perspectives (from neuroscientists to a wide array of philosophers to psychologists to quantum physicists), and there is nothing else that takes a broad picture without pursuing a single agenda. Is there some bias? Yes, there is in a sense. But it's a bias that latches on to the general trends of serious academics today -- for example, you might say that she has a materialist bias, but that is just the way that most serious and scientifically oriented thinkers operate these days. Overall, her perspective is, I think, very objective without losing what is truly fascinating about the topic.

Susan Blackmore is sharp and relentless in her quest to unveil confusion and misunderstanding regarding what consciousness is and what -or who- the self is. Her own views take unmistakeable shape as she reviews and examines -critically- the views of some of the most relevant authors on the matter. She includes a section on meditation and the Buddhist view on consciousness and the self. She is one of very few authors that dares take a challenging stance regarding common misunderstandings of the Buddha's teachings. After reading this book, the Buddhist teaching of anatta (no substance, or no-self) reveals a radical and liberating scenario.

Aunque este libro fue publicado hace m�s de diez a�os, me veo en la necesidad de rese�arlo debido a que muchos lectores est�n buscando un texto que sirva de continuaci�n al texto �Griego b�blico al alcance de todos� de Jos� A. Septi�n o al texto �Aprendamos griego� de Clarence Hale. Es decir, una obra que sirva para un estudio m�s avanzado del griego del Nuevo Testamento. Sin duda alguna, este texto Sintaxis exeg�tica del Nuevo Testamento griego es ideal para estudios m�s avanzados debido a que trata de la sintaxis, o sea la �parte de la gram�tica que ense�a a coordinar y unir las palabras para formar las oraciones y expresar conceptos� (DRAE). Como bien afirma el respetado biblista Mois�s Silva, quien recomienda este texto, la sintaxis es �el �rea de m�s importancia para la ex�gesis�.
Este libro est� dedicado a la sintaxis del verbo, el participio y las conjunciones. Su redacci�n es fluida y de f�cil lectura y comprensi�n. Cuenta adem�s con una serie de ap�ndices muy �tiles.
El autor escribi� en el a�o 2006 un segundo tomo dedicado al sustantivo, al art�culo, al adjetivo y al adverbio. Ese tomo se consigue poni�ndose en contacto directamente con su autor pues aun no ha sido impreso por ninguna editorial.
Hay dos razones por las que recomiendo este libro. La primera, porque est� escrito originalmente en espa�ol, lo cual ayuda mucho al lector latinoamericano. Es muy dif�cil entender estos asuntos del griego del Nuevo Testamento en traducciones de libros escritos para gente que habla otro idioma diferente al espa�ol, pues ya es suficiente con el esfuerzo de centrarse en el griego, para tener que pasar por otro idioma --que no sea espa�ol ni griego--para tratar estos temas. La segunda raz�n es porque est� escrito por alguien que no solamente sabe del asunto, sino que sabe c�mo ense�arlo. No en vano el profesor Hanna ha dedicado 27 a�os de su vida a ense�ar el griego en Maracay, Venezuela, donde reside actualmente y desde donde dirige un centro de capacitaci�n b�blica por Internet para toda Latinoam�rica.

John Watts is fellow and tutor in History at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He has written extensively on politics, government and political culture in later medieval Britain and Europe. This is a must have supplement to the CIPP foundation text book!! The CIPP text book - is really that - it's a text book - it has details and minutiae with references to research if you wanted to learn about a specific topic. This book by John Watts, however, is a study guide. It summarizes the four topical areas - tells you which ones to focus on. he has tips on the terms to learn on the glossary that is published by IAPP. There is a ton of practice test questions - with explanations on the answers - which teaches you the concepts. This is a must have in order to pass the CIPP foundation exam. I do have to warn you that there are some obvious typos (e.g. FRCA - should be FCRA) - but overlook those, because you know they are typos (does not cause any confusion on the concepts you need to learn) - this study guide is worth every penny!

The US portion of the book was very useful. Note, this book isn't a self-contained study aid - it serves more as a tutor with directions on what to review, research, know. This is why I gave it four stars (I deducted a star because the book isn't entirely clear that the IAPP certification process has changed and much of the data on "foundations" isn't necessary). Each chapter addresses a different topic covered on the CIPP exam and where to look on the IAPP website for more information & definitions. The questions are spot on. The answers provided are helpful, albeit you may wish to use IAPP's guides to supplement. Note for lawyers: unlike real life where lawyers would commit malpractice if they relied on memory for key dates and/or code specifics - the IAPP exam requires you to memorize every detail. So memorize, memorize, memorize. The upside, I everything I memorized for the exam was useful in real life (unlike the bar exam). As an aside, I found taking the CIPP exam in a paper format (as opposed to on a computer) a lot easier. If you like paper too, opt to take the exam at a conference instead of at a testing center. Best of luck - and welcome to privacy - a great profession that keeps improving because it values collaboration over litigation. Go figure!
