Helpful company on a very confusing road

Bless Diane Olive for writing this book, particularly because she's struggled through this challenge with all of the depleting demands it makes on body, mind, and spirit. Perhaps it's precisely because she addresses it from all three of those perspectives that this information resource is so helpful. While there's a great deal of material gathered here, this reader found it easy to read on an as-needed basis, letting both what my own healing experience has shown me and what my intuition gravitated toward work together to guide my way. There are practical suggestions here regarding physical environments and physical health measures that really work. There is also a well-balanced voice of encouraging optimism that I came to understand is as vital in the healing process of this baffling affliction as any other measure. The author understood early, I think, that this, like any challenge we face, is a chance to come to wholeness, when we're willing to approach it holistically, and with hope, rather than despair.

Success with Healing Morgellons

Ms. Olive's fearless exploration and discussion of how to achieve health care in a crisis when attempts are met with obstacles by our own health care and political systems, is a testimony to the power of truth and truth-telling as well as the compassion to share and reduce suffering. A truly adult novel, and that's high praise.

Stegner is already an eminence and he doesn't need my Amazon review to rest comfortably, but . . . this is one of those rare adult novels that deals tenderly and honestly with adult life -- the struggle for money and reputation, the shifting dynamics and tensions between two couples; how one recovers (if one does) from a major illness, how one faces death. It is a book for grownups, only because nineteen-year olds would have no idea of what the author describes, and how hard life is even for fairly privileged people in academia. I found it very moving and, as you can tell, difficult to describe. Early on in my reading, the characters were seriously real to me, so that I ached for them and felt attached to them. It's an outstanding book, but I fear it not flashy enough to warrant postmodern critical notice, although Stegner does shift both perspective and time. He creates a world -- no, several worlds.

A respectul, but dissenting, view

I appreciate that many reviewers have judged the book positively. But, along with eight of our nine-member book club, I find the writing self-indulgent and -- perhaps given Stegner's home in academia -- consciously ornate. A key character exposes her controlling personality and unfolding role in the narrative in the very first chapter, leaving only this reader's boredom and mild curiosity as to how the entire plot comes together at the end of the book. I would suggest that the novel's most useful contribution might be as an illustration of how, at a certain point in the country's literary tasteand for whatever reason, the book could have prompted so many critics to have fallen over themselves in adulation.

Bizarre

Characters were underdeveloped. Settings were were woven in and out of countries and decades in a most unsatisfying way. He always stopped short of giving characters enough dialogue or detail to make you care about them. The detail he paid to scenery was the opposite---10 times more developed than the main characters. Part II started with an abrupt switch to a lengthy talk with Hallie and Moe. There were pages and pages of writing about their kids and grandkids but to what end? These were not the characters we cared about. It felt like he was trying to too hard to imitate Steinbeck's East of Eden with its lush landscapes and quirky characters. Would not recommend this bizarre read!

A Step Toward Understanding

This book answers many questions about how we humans have gotten to the point we are today. Tracking our pre-history, as this book so capably does, gives us unsettling insights into why we behave as we do toward nature, ourselves, and this magical planet that we inhabit. The first step to correcting any problem is to acknowledge that it exists. This book can be a crucial first step in that process of correction. I highly recommend this important and entertaining book.

Spoiling Our Own Nest: Do Humans have a Future?

Sale has written a comprehensive synthesis of the evolution of human behavior, especially when it comes to the subjugation (and destruction) of our environment. Clearly the human condition in the late Modern period is a major mess: overpopulation, reliance on non-renewable resources, global warming, ocean and freshwater pollution... seems we haven't much time left as a species. Figuring how our evolution led us into this mess is an important question. Though Sale's information and arguments are well researched and cited, he occasionally over-reaches in his conclusions. For example, he concludes that the evolution of human hunting led to hierarchy even though the evidence he presents on hunting cultures such as the !Kung/San falsifies this conclusion. I especially appreciated the final chapter where, based on the long period of Homo erectus evolution, Sale finds a hopeful alternative that could guide us out of our modern mess and into a sustainable postmodern future.

About the Author
Ray Sinnott's varied career, mainly in design and development, began with several major companies including Dupont and John Brown. The main areas covered within these appointments were: Gas Production and Distribution, Nuclear Energy, Elastomers and Textile fibres. After his career in industry he joined the Chemical Engineering Department, University of Wales Swansea in 1970, specialising in teaching process and plant design, and other engineering practice subjects. The first edition of Chemical Engineering Design (Coulson and Richardson's Vol 6) was published in 1983. Subsequent editions have been published at approximately 5 year intervals. Ray Sinnott retired from full time teaching in 1995 but has maintained close contact with the engineering profession.

Chemical Engineering in Great Britain.

This set of books is a good indication of the British view of what is the discipline of chemical engineering: "Momentum, Heat, and Mass Transfer"; "Separation Processes"; "Chemical Reaction Engineering"; and "Process Design". The first two volumes of "Coulson and Richardson" were initially part of the McGraw-Hill Series in Chemical Engineering in 1954.

Gracia �no?

Este libro no es sobre gente que habla acerca de fr�as pruebas que demuestran algo; son testimonios e historias que tocan lo m�s profundo del coraz�n. La verdad es que no podemos saber a ciencia cierta si todo lo que narran los entrevistados en verdad les ocurri�, pero al mismo tiempo, cada una de esas historias no son nada ajeno a la realidad del cristianismo: corazones restaurados, vicios olvidados, perd�n sin parang�n,etc. Creo que este libro debe ser le�do por todos aquellos que creen que Dios ya no puede actuar en la vida de alguien, ya que, sin duda, Dios puede actuar en la vida de quien �l desee, sin tener que darnos ni la m�s m�nima explicaci�n.
