In producing this Fifth Edition, the content has again been reviewed by these ICS and OCIMF, together with the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH), to ensure that it continues to reflect current best practice and legislation. This edition also takes account of recent changes in recommended operating procedures, particularly those prompted by the introduction of the International Safety Management (ISM) Code, which became mandatory for tankers on 1st July 1998. The Guide provides operational advice to directly assist personnel involved in tanker and terminal operations, including guidance on, and examples of, certain aspects of tanker and terminal operations and how they may be managed. It s is NOT a definitive description of how tanker and terminal operations are conducted. It is a general industry recommendation that a copy of ISGOTT is kept and used onboard every tanker and in every terminal so that there is a consistent approach to operational procedures and shared responsibilities for operations at the ship/shore interface.

The Stonemasters book

This is a large coffee table book detailing the climbing accomplishments of of a group of S California climbers that went on to be some of the best, most well known climbers of the last 30 years. A piece of history. Some of these stories have circulated for years by word of mouth in the climbing community. It's great to read them first hand by those who were actually there. The book is well written and hard to put down. Because most of the Photos are old they leave a little to be desired. However, all in all a great book that I will treaThe Stonemasters: California Rock Climbers in the Seventiessure.

Youth and Memory

Thank you to John Long and Dean Fidelman for assembling this book. For anyone who spent time in the 1970s climbing, this book will ring close to home. If you were fortunate to wander around California climbing then, it will brighten specific and indelible memories - forged in adventure's crucible - and perhaps a bit faded today. For those younger and less fortunate to not be climbing then, absorbing the history and achievements will hopefully instill new passion and understanding. But no matter your generation or background there is value here.

Consider this example of vision, when ours blended for a time with theirs. Three of us pulled onto El Cap Spire in June 1979. It was quiet and we were alone with our thoughts of the day. The route above was unknown to us, and the normal doubts mixed with confidence played in our heads. Then it all calmed down and we knew the future and our fleeting mastery of it. Why ? Softly floating up from the meadow came a few soft notes of jazz, then a bit stronger as twilight's quiet descended. The saxophone continued for about an hour ... John Bacher's soft message to anyone really listening. We were. Bravo John.

To date, this is the best kindle book Ms. Snow has authored on the mental illness of OCPD. She presents very astute Insights she has acquired on the subject of the OCPD male/female relationship, and outlines persuasively how the OCPD person's family history can be instrumental in instilling OCPD traits into the psyche of those prone to this disorder. This kindle book is a fine addition to the understanding of one's spouse or partner who is bound by obsessions, compulsions, and misperceptions about life; as Ms. Snow offers a number of keys to a more fulfilling life between both parties, which is possible when such keys are recognized and implemented. David B. Braun is a research and development scientist and an Associate at Interactive Consulting. His professional career encompasses a broad spectrum of technologies including rubber, plastics, pulp and papermaking, mining, ceramics, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. He has written numerous technical papers and is the author of two books relating to the pharmaceutical industry: Over-the-Counter Pharmaceutical Formulations and Pharmaceutical Manufacturers: A Global Directory. He has contributed chapters to several other books and has been awarded 11 U.S. and several worldwide patents.

Myer R. Rosen is President of Interactive Consulting, Inc., of East Norwich, NY. He is a director of The American Institute of Chemists, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (London), Vice President of the Association of Consulting Chemists and Chemical Engineers, and a Fellow of the American College of Forensic Examiners. Very good but ... some things you should know.

First of all, this book is very well written. The examples are short and very concise. I personally learn by typing the examples and I like them to be short and to the point! This book is also very good from the aspect of not holding you back. It covers very basic control structures through sockets! I also like the fact that there are 394 examples you can download from the web easily. This is definately more ecological. Now some bad ... 1) The 394 examples that can be downloaded are not categorized! BUMMER. You must sift through all of them to figure out which ones apply to your current chapter, although some titles do make this easier. 2) If you are like me and constantly use the index to search for stuff ... you probably won't like this one. 3) Out of 707 pages, 170 of them are dedicated to answering end of chapter questions. That is 24% of the book! I don't consider this a plus. I would have preferred to download answers instead of downloading examples! SUMMERY: This book teaches programming in JAVA without getting bogged down in all the available pre-written web stuff ... although it does cover some web applications. It doesn't hold you back and doesn't assume that you already know a programming language. If you do know C++, you can navigate this book rather quickly and be up and running fast! I'm very happy with this book overall.

Very good, but a few problems

Very good book for the instruction of Java. The book is also very true to Osborne's 'Teach Yourself' series. Some things could be covered in more detail though. Some things, like overriding Object.toString(), need to be explained better. The book is also easier for someone with some programming experience, especially in C++ because Java is a LOT like C++. Overall though, this is a very good book, and i highly recommend it.

Not too deep, not too shallow, excellent for begginers with some OOP theory background. It's kind of old but, for learning the basics is just perfect.

Pakistan is on the lips of many in today's world where terror is the great evil. "Pakistan: Democracy, Terrorism, and the Building of a Nation" analyzes Pakistan in hopes of understanding its role in today's war on terror and what Pakistan's true position is in the war on terror. Looking at its long history and the role conflict has played with it, a state trying to find its own identity between the Islamic world and the behemoth of India. "Pakistan" is a thoughtful and scholarly analysis of the country, highly recommended.

Disappointing

This ambitious volume aims to update Constance Green's extraordinary 1963 history of Washington. Lewis is a great storyteller, but he comes up far short -- this book is no match for Green. Lewis tells little that is new to students of Washington history. He retells familiar stories and spends an inordinate amount of time on the 18th and 19th centuries. The post-World War II city gets all of two chapters, a stunning oversight given how much has happened in D.C. in the past half century. If you don't know anything about D.C., this might be a nice introduction to the origins of the city, but if you know something about the city or you want to learn about the city since World War II your time would be better spent reading something else.

A Good and Complete History of D.C.

As a native Washingtonian, I thoroughly enjoyed this history. It begins with the initial planning in the 18th century to the opening of Metro in 1976.
My only caveat is that Professor Lewis is not a Washingtonian, so when I got to the last chapter I was familiar enough with the subject beginning with the riots of 1968 to the above mentioned Metro, to spot some errors and matters that could be argued against. Specifically:

He misspells the name of a Md. congressman Gilbert Gude
He calls Columbia Heights, Cleveland Heights, though the area he is talking about is most likely in neither, but in the Adams-Morgan neighborhood.
He speaks of Tacoma Park (the wrong Washington) when he means either the town of Takoma Park, Md. or the Takoma neighborhood of NW DC,
Whichever he means, its misspelled.
.He refer to the hotel in which Marion Barry was arrested as "seedy." I don't think that's a fair representation of this downtown hotel which is now a Weston.
Metro is referred to as "the first significant subway built anywhere in the [U.S.] after World War II. BART beat it by a couple of years.

None of this will matter to most readers. Overall this is a complete history well worth reading. Its surprising how few people really know much about Washington, D.C. once they leave the mall and the museums..

Overview of Washington DC

This is an enjoyable general history of the nation's capital for the lay reader. The author Tom Lewis (as far as i know we are not related) covers everything from George Washington's vision for the city up to contemporary times.

I think he does a particularly good job of giving one a feeling for how it was to be in the city at various times in its history. And Lewis deserves credit for going a good job addressing race issues as experienced by the predominantly black population of Washington DC. I think this is the book's greatest strength, as it is in this area that the book best shows how the city mirrored the nation.

On the downside, the book does not have a compelling character, except perhaps George Washington in the beginning, but even he does not come alive in the book the way he did in Ron Chernow's biography

The book’s uniquely comprehensive coverage of terrorism includes extended cases on the IRA, the Tamil Tigers, Chechen rebels, Al Qaeda, Aum Shinrikyo, Hizbullah, and Hamas. Each case looks at the historical origins, political factors, leadership, and organization of the group to give context. Discussions of typical tactics, patterns of violence, the role of external actors, and outcomes help readers to explore possible solutions that might stop the cycle of violence and promote peaceful coexistence among the antagonists.

Appendix materials include glossaries of terrorist groups and technical terms.

R. Hrair Dekmejian is a professor of political science and international business at the University of Southern California. His specialties include comparative political violence, Middle East/Islamic studies, political elites, multinational business and politics, U.S. foreign policy, the political economy of oil, and comparative ethnic politics. Professor Dekmejian has appeared as a commentator on world affairs on radio and television and is quoted in major newspapers and publications. A U.S. Army veteran, Dekmejian has served as a consultant to various agencies including the Department of State, the U.S. Information Agency, and the Department of Defense. He is the author of numerous books and articles including Islam in Revolution; Troubled Waters: The Geopolitics of the Caspian Region; and The Just Prince: A Manual of Leadership.

Warning on Captive Prince: Slavery, rape, and pedophilia.

Here’s the set up for Captive Prince, imagine this: You’re a slave, bound up and ready to be sent as a gift to the prince of the neighboring formerly hostile country of Vere. You’re angry and confused and feeling very much betrayed by your people. You’re not trained, but that’s alright. The prince apparently likes a challenge.

Jk, you’re actually the prince of Akielos.

Your brother has apparently pulled the biggest dick move in history, and has taken the throne while telling everyone you’re dead and sending you off to a nation that hates you because you killed their precious previous prince. Yea, his little brother isn’t too happy with Prince Damianos.

Right now though, you’re just Damen, and no one is the wiser. If anyone in Vere figures out that you’re not just named in mockery of the supposedly late Akielon prince, you’re screwed. Unfortunately, that doesn’t matter much to your new master, Prince Laurent. He hates your entire nation, and he’s not particularly interested in having a difficult slave. Your treatment in Vere is pretty bad, despite you theoretically having a comfy gig as the prince’s slave. Everyone calls you a barbarian, and seems to view you as an unbroken stud horse. You may or may not be a “pet,” which is basically a concubine, but since you’re not actually sleeping with the prince, you basically just sit around until you piss him off enough to do something about you. And oh, he will do things to you. Not fun things at all. This is not that kind of story.

Hey, at least the prince is totally your type. Except, you know, his whole terrible personality. In the quiet of your head, there’s plenty of time to thinking about murdering him. You’ve got priorities, after all.

“Sweetmeat?” said Laurent.

In the stretched-out moment that followed, Damen thought explicitly about killing him.

If, as a reader, you’re looking for a sweet gay romance story, this is probably not it.

As of the first book, this story is largely about two men who don’t particularly like or trust one another being forced together by politics and intrigue. Damen is a noble guy in a terrible situation still trying to find a way to do the right thing. Laurent is an absolute jerk, but you can’t help but feel for the guy. It seems something is going terribly wrong with his life, and Damen may just be the man to help him. Or maybe they’ll murder each other. You have to read the book to find out!

Captive Prince is a book that seems to be building up to something big. Not to spoil anything, but by the end of volume one, everything is about to hit the fan and you’re left starving for resolution.

Submission, Command; My Enemy, My Brother.

I highly recommend reading both volumes of the "Captive Prince" - and wait anxiously for the third to be published in 2014 (per the author's blog). Fortunately, the end of Volume 2 is a great transition point even while setting some deep barbs to keep you checking back for Volume 3. I found that I reread both Volumes right after finishing Volume 2 for the first time and enjoyed the reread at least as much as the first pass because I was able to enjoy how the story unfolds from an entirely different perspective.

I found the author's use of language pleasantly and uniquely different than the usual highly edited fodder from the big publishing houses. I hope Volume 3 is not radically different! As noted elsewhere the character's are enjoyably developed.

Based on 20+ years in the military, I think the author shows an excellent understanding of prototype military command styles, how they are developed, how each binds their subordinate fighting forces together and to their will in the face of horror and death, and how successful senior commanders arrange layers of plans, operations, and resources across both time and space while hedging for uncertainty. Like this story perhaps, my own experiences have shown me the common and very similar human side of men who were once my enemies in battle. In truth, brotherhood comes in many forms.

There is certainly more than one "Captive Prince" in this tale, each struggling for freedom... and coming to a new understanding regarding the complexity of just what "freedom" implies.

For me the books were an easy, straight forward, enjoyable read without being simplistic or obvious. Unlike the "Game of Thrones," there are no jarring transitions across an inflated, gratuitous storyline. Instead, "Captive Prince" drives you on relentlessly towards the culmination of an epic conflict of wills and arms that you know is coming... though not in what form or when.

Submission - Command; My Enemy - My Brother; Conflict - Reconciliation; Growth - Death: All these ideas are woven into Captive Prince - between men or even within the same person. In fiction, as in life, there can hardly be one without the other

So read on, and enjoy.

Building, Drawing me in and I'm Loving Every Minute!

Wow. So how do you even explain this book without going on and on for twenty pages. This is the kind of book you need to read a few chapters and then get together to gush or seeth about with friends because there's just SO much!

It plays out like a historical, Romanesque or Highland tale, except it's all fictional lands/kingdoms/societies.

At first it's hard to stick with who's what - the author starts with a map of the region and a glossary - and it helps. I had to refer back to it a couple times in the beginning but then I had it.

Then - it just gets good!

Every turn of the page has another twist. At first you think there is nothing useful in Laurent, and then as the book progresses, you begin to realize that maybe there's something redeemable in there, but no matter what, or how hard you try, you aren't going to figure him out because the author does not want you to.

Damen is... Delicious and I think he carries all of the hopes for all that is wrong to somehow turn out right.

There is some kinky going on all over the place, mostly consensual, but there are slaves in this and societal norms that are also a product of this very creative and intriguing setting so there are a couple non-con scenes involving slaves.

As a m/m romance, I wouldn't say that this was particularly romantic but it seems to have set the ground work for something more to happen in the rest of the series. There is some m/m action but not between our two main characters and honestly, I'm so glad there wasn't. I'm actually enjoying the mystery and the fact that these two didn't look at each other and immediately feel "something deep in their core" or "insane lust" or "insert any cliched insta-love phrase" here. But honestly, I don't know that they ever will be any m/m action between them, just a feeling.

This story is building, drawing me in and I'm loving every minute of it!
