About the Author
Christopher A. Darden has worked for 15 years as a deputy district attorney for Los Angeles County, using the same passion he showed at the trial of O.J. Simpson to prosecute racist cops, murderers, drug dealers, and gang members. With every defendant black or white, rich or poor he had one simple goal: justice.

The trial of the century was no different. Twenty years later, still a fresh perspective; must-read on race relations

When the news came blaring through that O.J. Simpson was the suspect in his ex-wife's recent murder, and all the speculation that came with that was interrupting tv and radio programming, I decided not to pay any attention until all the evidence was in and it was a "settled" case. The next year astounded me. It was impossible to not be aware of the trial, and even though I still made no effort to follow the case, the people involved became household names and many of the facts of the case imprinted upon my mind. Once the verdict was announced I was shocked at the stark divide between the way black people and white people in this country reacted and, as time revealed, thought about things in general. I was busy with life and relieved that it was finally over and just hoped we'd heal, as a nation. I never looked into it as a "settled case."
Then the tv miniseries aired recently and I caught it. I was amazed how familiar it all felt, and very curious about what was accurate and not, so I started looking at books about the trial in Amazon. I liked what the blurb said about Darden's. It's the first book I've ever read on the subject and I found it remarkably fresh and informative. In addition I found it incredibly insightful about race relations and I feel that is helpful today in a way I never expected from a book about a twenty year old trial. Christopher Darden is a passionate and poetic soul, who tells his own story as he weaves the tale of the trial, so that you're getting an autobiographical insight into his fundamental outlook on life, specifically as it relates to justice and to race, and more specifically racial justice. If you're looking for "just the facts" of the case, you probably won't want to wade through all the extra in this book, but if you like a good read, with depth and subtlety and nuance, you'll enjoy this book. You'll get the nitty gritty of the case and the trial, but you'll be treated, in addition, to the deep insights of a fine mind and a truly decent outlook.

"Smokescreen" Defense

Seems like a large number of us readers and watchers disagreed with the verdict, and even though it was over 20 years ago now, we are still interested in reviewing the facts and evidence once again to see if there is anything we missed. I like the way Mr. Darden laid it all out in an easy to follow style, exposing what I called a "smoke screen defense" the so-called "dream team" put on. And sadly, it worked, confusing the jurors and leading to a shocking "not guilty" verdict.

Intimate, revealing and engrossing. In Contempt is as much about Chris Darden the man as it is about the OJ Simpson trial. in fact, it could almost be categorized as an autobiography that happens to be framed around "Trial of the Century." You really get a sense of the personal anguish Chris went through during the trial. It's maddening when you consider that he was only doing his job. I appreciated leaning about the bond that Marcia and Chris formed during the trial, Darden's struggle with fatherhood and the pressure he felt as a black man during the trial.

I'd only read one book about the trial prior to reading Mr. Darden's. (Daniel Petrocelli's fantastic, Triumph of Justice) I didn't really expect to learn much more from In Contempt but was pleasantly surprised. It was interesting to learn the glaring (and subtle) differences between the criminal and civil trials. I was already convinced of Simpson's guilt but came away even more repulsed by him and his so-called Dream Team.

The Ideal Guide to the Livin' World!!!

I am a man of nature.
So it's no suprise that it only took two minutes after it's discovery to officially want to add this to my compendium collection.
After a week, I manage to find and buy this book at Barnes n' Noble (cost me $50 - you'll get a much better deal on here!)

First off, I'm going to tell you know (though you probably already know), this book is FREAKIN' BIG!!!! Might as well be a college textbook! You'll need to find some (worthy) space in your bookshelf for it.

Secondly, the sheer number of species (and specimens, mind you) inside these covers in astounding. Compare a book from the same series (DK's Animal for example), which had about 2,000 species in it.
This tome has 5,000 (something you need to see in order to grasp the sheer quantity)! And not just animals... where else could you find a book with rocks, minerals, fossils, shells, microbes, fungi, plants, protists, and animals all in one!
It's taxonomically organized (with the system for rocks and minerals as well) starting with Bacteria & Archaea first, then Protists (yes, it uses the kingdom Protista - something I don't usually favor), then the plants take over for a good portion of the book (any lover of flowers is going to flip out), fungi proceed, then finally come the animals (which takes up half of the book - and I don't even mind). One thing I really enjoy is the fact that this is one of the only plant books I've seen were everything isn't organized for gardeners. And there are some very cool rocks and minerals in here.

Third, the format is reminicent of a Sears/Walmart catalog - the species group is listed, and then specimens abound to every last corner of the page. The photos (and illustrations for some) are wonderful and very clear.

A few "not favorable" things I might add - not all animal groups get coverage, most entries that cover trees do not show the entire plant but simply a branch or leaf, the fish diversity is somewhat limited, and I've already mentioned the kingdom Protista and the dominating Animalia.

But you shouldn't pay attention to these things, because if you're looking for a book with a complete diversity of the world we live in - I would recommend this.

The natural world

`Natural History' is, as it claims a visual guide, perhaps not the ultimate, but close and not everything - almost. Its chapter on fish seems a little lean, but most will not notice.
It is a big heavy, over 7 pounds, coffee table book. It does have some stunning pictures and lots of colored illustrations. Most of what it includes are sections on each page with coloured charts, pictures, and illustrations of many elements of the natural world; rocks, ferns, a variety of snails, birds of prey - it is filled with almost any living thing you could think of.
The maps are well done and it will do much to clear up any confusion one has on classifications. You could even accomplish much identification yourself of rocks and birds using its clear pictures.

There are sections on; the living earth, minerals, rocks and fossils, microscopic life, plants, fungi and animals including invertebrates, chordates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
There is a glossary and an index. It is an excellent reference and learning tool and of course has the expertise of the Smithsonian Institute behind it.
This is a book young children could learn from, but adults would not feel `talked" down to.
It would make a great addition to your home, school or as a Christmas present that should get much use.

The DK science books have set a standard that is hard to beat - and this is one of their best. Great photography and graphic design and just enough info to get you started on any subject. I can't reccomend this book with enough superlatives. An absolute joy!

The novel was translated into several languages, inter alia into German by Otto Schrag (1951) and into Hungarian by Sz�jgy�rt� L�szl� (1975). The novel's abundance in slang expressions means a great challenge for the translator and thus offers insightful material for the exploration of translation theory and practice. After a general introduction of the linguistic phenomenon of slang, including a theoretical analysis of its characteristics, functions and its linguistic features as well as a brief overview of slang in literature, chapter three shall introduce Jones's novel with the focus on its slang elements. Furthermore, the first part of chapter four is dedicated to explore the translatability of slang on the basis of Hervey and Higgins' theory of compromise and compensation by giving German and Hungarian translation examples of the novel. Moreover, subchapter 4.2 will examine the translation methods with regard to Jones's novel by focusing on the different traditions of American, German and Hungarian slang usage. Subchapter 4.

He has over 20 years' experience in the planning, design, and deployment of microwave and other transmission networks around the world. Excellent Book

I bought this book for background in Microwave before being assigned as PM of a Microwave project. It's a good book and gives great information, but does not detail site and path surveys, which is what I needed most. Definitely worth the money spent.

Excellent Microwave Engineering Book

This book provides an excellent overview of microwave engineering within the industry. It is well written and laid out in an introduction to deployment fashion. Excellent discussion on link budget development and a thorough view of availability versus reliability within the microwave path. I like how the author introduces you to the basic fundamentals of microwave networks and then moves into planning, design, and deployment. If you design or work with microwave radios, this book should be on your shelf as a right hand tool. The book has been an excellent reference to me for developing software and microwave link budgets. Great job!
