Castles: Their Construction and History (Dover Architecture), by Sidney Toy

The art of fortification had reached a high state of development even at the dawn of history. Powerful military works, dating from the remotest periods, have been found in Asia Minor, in Greece, and in the basins of the Tigris, the Euphrates, and the Nile rivers. The medieval castle, with its strategic, crenellated ramparts and aura of legend and romance, represents perhaps the most familiar form of a long-crucial art.
This concise, scholarly volume traces the history of the castle from its ancient roots in the Levant, through Roman times and the Middle Ages, to the fanciful chateaux of the sixteenth century. Profusely illustrated with nearly 200 photographs, floor-plan diagrams, and pen-and-ink renderings, Castles explores innovations in castle design, siege operations, artillery, and other weapons, living conditions within the castle, and clearly explains intriguing features of construction: moats, baileys, keeps, donjons, barbicans, double curtains, loopholes, and many others.
In addition, noted historian and fortification expert Sidney Toy takes the reader on a detailed guided tour of over 120 of the most famous castles and fortresses of Europe and the Middle East. Explore Caernarvon Castle (associated with the Princes of Wales), Dover Castle, Arundel Castle, Hadrian's Wall, the Tower of London, the famed city of Troy, and dozens of others in vivid accounts focusing on the architecture, offensive and defensive modifications, and historical importance of each structure or site.
Castle enthusiasts, medievalists, military buffs, travelers, and anyone interested in the evolution and development of the castle will find this meticulously researched overview an informative and absorbing account.

Castles: Is a highly detailed and technical study.
By sylvesterr@hq.22sigbde.army.mil
As an Army Officer the study of military history is a professional necessity. The book: Castles their Construction and History has proven to be an incredible aid to this end. I am stationed in Europe and use the book as a guide when I travel and explore the castles in Germany, France and Italy. The book is very technical, it wastes some space giving detailed step by step descriptions of many castles but the casual reader of history will find the drawings, photos and overviews of history very interesting. The text of the book is rather dull to the non-history buff. It was very useful as a reference book while at the University of Florida.

Sometimes too technical, but very helpful!
By David Stabler
I bought this book because, well to put it plainly, I have always wanted to design a castle of my own. Having no real talent for architecture, I thought I'd see how others had done it before, and why they made the decisions they did. This book does a lot for the novice who wants to learn these things, but does so with enough illustrations to keep the readers interest through the text. I can see why another reviewer said it would make a good textbook -- it reads like one, and provides quite the education!
Add it to a military history collection, a chivalric texts collection, or to your Lego room for the next time you want a more powerful castle than the kit suggests (but, putting little lego men heads on pikes at the gates may be going overboard).

Just the facts.
By A Customer
There is no fluff and no romanticizing. This book is just plain hows and whys on castle construction and their evolution from wooden stockades to stone fortresses. It examines the changes in defenses as warfare evolved. It is dry reading, but this is bare bones information with no fantasizing....just what I wanted.

Amazon.com Review
In today's fast-changing marketplace, a business can't expect to thrive by just making products and selling them, argues Stephan H. Haeckel in Adaptive Enterprise. "It does not matter how good you are at making widgets if the market for widgets disappears or if your competitors offer dramatically new and improved widgets faster than you can," writes Haeckel, director of strategic studies at IBM's Advanced Business Institute. Instead, for a company to succeed nowadays, says Haeckel, it needs to know how to adapt to customers--even before they themselves know what they want. Haeckel lays out a strategy to create such a "sense-and-respond" approach that will allow companies to move quickly amid change. Among the key steps: companies must use innovative ways to gather information about customer needs. For instance, car manufacturers used video cameras in airport parking lots to discover that people often struggle to lift heavy suitcases over the high lower edges of trunks. In mall parking areas, the cameras revealed that shoppers had nowhere to put soft drinks they just bought. Now, low trunk edges and cupholders are standard features in almost every car. Because "sense-and-respond" is a relatively new business model formulated by Haeckel, the book is heavy on theory and slim on concrete examples. Nevertheless, Adaptive Enterprise has some good ideas for business leaders looking for an edge in a world where rapid change is the norm. --Dan Ring

From the Back Cover
"Adaptive Enterprise provides the clearest and simplest set of tools necessary for a long company life." -Peter Schwartz, Chairman, Global Business Network "Drawing equally on adaptive systems theory and his own corporate experience, Haeckel has created the first practical road map to guide us toward the adaptive enterprise. He has gone beyond the mantra of 'embracing change' to describe the operational and organizational processes needed to create and lead an adaptive business." --Christopher Meyer, Director, Center for Business Innovation, Ernst & Young LLP "The future belongs to firms that can have a rich dialogue with customers and provide personalized responses to their unpredictable requirements. Stephan Haeckel has written the definitive guidebook on how to design and guide organizations toward this goal." -George S. Day, Professor, The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania "Stephan Haeckel's sense-and-respond business model for the information age is revolutionary. Adaptive Enterprise presents an utterly persuasive case for doing business in new ways." -Ann M. Drake, Chief Executive Officer, DSC Logistics "Many books on how to cope with information-age discontinuity read like they are written for entrepreneurs and small businesses-they offer great prescriptions and say 'just do it.' Stephan Haeckel has written a provocative handbook that recognizes the enormity of the challenge faced by large, complex organizations whose leaders, no matter how progressive their thinking, need more help making the sense-and-respond idea work for them." -Thomas M. Hout, Senior Advisor, The Boston Consulting Group

Command and control in complex adaptive systems
By Bill Godfrey
If you are ready to accept the notion that complexity governs your external markets, but are not yet ready to accept that the same rules may apply inside your organisation, you may find comfort in this prescription. It purports to be about the distinction between a 'make-and-sell' organisation and a 'sense-and-respond' organisation. The first is production efficiency focused and second is focused on customer satisfaction. (What the author calls 'sense-and-respond' is in fact an unacknowledged version of the Kolb cycle or cycle of organisational learning cycle, so well examined by Nancy Dixon. It is essential to all forms of learning, whether that is applied to providing customer satisfaction or to playing a musical instrument)
Overtly he argues that the shift from a make-and-sell orientation to a sense-and-respond orientation is a major piece of unfinished business for organisations. The reason that he can argue this is that he 'bundles' the issue of customer responsiveness with the much wider issue of complexity and unpredictability in the environment - in other words, he argues that it is not possible to be truly customer responsive if you do not also recognise complexity in markets.
Beneath this surface argument that the new complexity requires new approaches and its characterisation as a move to 'sense-and-respond', lies the real issue, which is the defence of command-and-control from devolution of control, which the author characterises dismissively as 'communicate-and-hope'. The author develops a framework which is designed to retain the essential features of command-and -control, while building flexibility and responsiveness. He argues that forms of governance that challenge command-and-control have only been effective in smaller and simpler organisations than the giants with which he is primarily concerned. By extension, he argues that they can not work in such organisations.
The core of his prescription is the ability of central management to provide central direction to the organisation by the use of an analogy to 'fly by wire' technology. In other words, he advocates the use of modern technology to keep central management informed of unpredictable change so fast that they can respond appropriately within tight time deadlines. When a 'modular' approach to structuring organisations is added, he argues that they can respond effectively not only to the generality of customers but to particular customers. However, the question of relationships with internal stakeholders - employees - does not figure in his schematic, nor does the issue of external alliances and partnerships. Both (separately and together) challenge the capacity of command and control: it is not just customers and markets.

A practical methodology based on three key ingredients
By Alan N Hohne (alan.hohne@moore.edu.au)
How different it is to be a reader in 1999 of Sense and Respond by Stephan Haeckel compared to what it was as one of the subjects in the eighties of which he writes. Then, no formal Sense and Respond model. Just "make-it-up-as-you-go" - euphemastically called "being flexible".
Now at last, something more than rhetoric to rely on. For over two decades we have been promised competitive edge through technology investment, magic formulae for change management, super profits through continuous process improvement, market dominance through customer focus and a whole lot of other so-called "silver bullets". A whole generation of management by best-seller has meant that the more things change the more they stay the same. And why? Because they have all missed the truly unique elements of Steve Haeckel's formula.
Governance principles and reasons for being have been around for generations. Leaders who do more than communicate and hope are well written-up. Organisation theory based on a systems approach is not new and modular organisation structures are not original. Neither is mass-customisation or the steering of a business based on manipulation of data managed as a corporate resource so that business transactions are reflected in decision support systems. Learning organisations based on adaptive loops are common, customer-driven process re-engineering case studies abound and project managers don't survive if they don't keep track of who-owes-what-to-whom.
So what is unique about Steve Haeckel's brew?
First, like Harold Geneen and his "grandma's soup" of the seventies, he's cooked slowly, tasted often and stirred in small amounts of lots of ingredients when the taste was not yet right. But most importantly he has based his brew on good stock. From the start he realised that you can't revive corpses. He has admitted that corporate transformation (the process that changes a caterpillar into a butterfly) and not reformation (work with what you've got) is what's needed to deal with the real world of change (continuous discontinuity).
Second, he's produced a uniquely implementable version of an extraordinarily elegant commitment management protocol. He has thereby shown how to co-ordinate systematically the dynamics of 'who owes what to whom' in a way that enforces consistency with the governance principles and other policies of an enterprise. More importantly, he has demonstrated that the key to transforming a traditional business, so that it can thrive in an environment of continuous discontinuity, lies in equipping leaders to track the interactions of negotiated commitments to produce outcomes within the boundaries of the strategic intent of an enterprise. Not only has he dealt with the human factors of this critical equation, he has translated the sophisticated theory of commitment management protocols into robust practice and exploited hitherto ignored technology. The result is an order of magnitude more powerful than the business process re-engineering with which it is all to easily confused.
Thirdly, he has successfully integrated a carefully selected inventory of proven components to produce a result in which the whole is considerably greater than the sum of the parts. The finished work displays a lustre that only comes from extensive rubbing against the real world. Key to this outcome has been Steve's understanding of the organic nature of the system that is an adaptive enterprise. For him, the system that deals with the problem of responding to the unpredictable is more than a mere academic abstraction. Each ingredient he has introduced has had to stand up before hundreds of discerning critics - his own customers to whom he has been accountable for an 'outcome'. Steve has understood that an adaptive enterprise is a dynamic interaction between real people, innovative technology, sophisticated intellectual concepts, practical leadership skills and sound information management methodologies.
Neither one or all three of these unique elements of the Haeckel formula can magically make any old 'bus driver' a brilliant 'cabbie'. Nor, should they. This is not a book for the addicts of management by best seller. But any leader of a traditional corporation who can't 'sense' that Steve has got the problem right, who can't 'interpret' commitment management as a survival issue and who doesn't 'decide' to embark on an integrated journey of corporate transformation ought to 'act' in the interests of shareholders and make way for the present. The future is here and the early adopters of the Haeckel method of transformation will make change their ally and the unexpected their active business partner.
As a former CIO of Westpac Banking Corporation and after 25 years in electronic banking I offer a word of advice. If you operate a traditional business in today's market place you will ignore this book at your peril.

The Future of Service Industries
By Paul T. Kidd (paulkidd@cheshirehenbury.com)
Adaptive Enterprise covers two separate but related topics - mass customisation (customisation at mass production costs) and agility (capability to deal with changes in the business environment and the associated high levels of uncertainty). The book is primarily focused on service industries, where services can often be customised through organisational (re)configuration (hence the agility dimension). Most importantly, the book covers the difficulties of moving from make and sell to sense and respond - difficulties often ignored in cookbook style business books. The book also addresses application of systems thinking to enterprise design - an important topic that is not covered enough in business books. Those interested in agility will also find Appendix B useful. Here one finds a decision process to use when one is faced with significant uncertainty. Overall the book is refreshing in its honesty. After reading this book you might also want to read some follow-ups: Mass Customisation (Joseph Pine); Agile Virtual Enterprise (Ted Goranson) and Agile Manufacturing (Paul T. Kidd).

The Temptation of St. Anthony, by Gustave Flaubert

Flaubert's story is based on the legends surrounding the monastic hermit St. Anthony (who lived during the second half of the third century AD) and the various temptations that he faced. The story is written in a prose-play form the reader has the "scenes" described at length, before the prose dialogue hits like a thunderclap. In the opening scene there is a very detailed picture of the desolate desert and in Saint Anthony's opening "monologue" some of the disaffection that will serve as the conduit by which the various temptations sent by Satan shall reach him during the course of the night to follow. Later in the story, Anthony goes into his hut and reads passages of how the Most High exalted his believers upon even the most puissant of monarchs. Stories of how the faithful overcame great obstacles and temptations, from avarice to lust to hubris to each of the other Seven Capital Sins. As Saint Anthony falls asleep, Satan himself materializes out of the desert air and his devils begin a bit of mischief that leads to Anthony awakening and being confronted first by the lust-filled "Queen of Sheba," whom he can barely resist. Next, Satan assumes the form of a fellow hermit, Saint Hilarion, in order to tempt Anthony to committing the grave sin of heresy. And so it continues, each temptation building upon each other, Saint Anthony assailed more and more with each sharp thrust. The scenes continue to be highly charged and imaginative in how these temptations are portrayed in both symbolic and literal forms. By the end of the book, Saint Anthony is brought to the cusp of collapsing into concupiscence, only to be granted a last minute reprieve...perhaps.

The Really Unreadable Flaubert
By reading man
SALAMMBO was declared unreadable by Cyril Connolly, but I think TENTATION has it beat by a long shot.

The fruit of Flaubert's early romantic obsession and, even more clearly, his masochistic side, I don't see how any English reader could take this seriously as literature, though as a self-revealing document it's interesting.

I wonder why Penguin decided to publish this translation by a woman with a Russian name (don't have the text in front of me, her first name is Kitty) instead of at least assigning the job to Baldick, Tannock, Kreilewhatshisname, their regular cadre of French translators. I expect they thought it wasn't worth the cost when Kitty had already done the job and the book would only appeal to Flaubert completists.

avoid the kindle translation
By J. Paul
I am a big fan of the work itself, but wanted to throw in a recommendation for the Penguin Classics edition. By all means, avoid the Kindle translation, as it is crazy bad. Certain passages read strangely while a majority of them are just wrong. I'm no scholar; I just bought both versions and it's remarkable how much better the Penguin Classics edition is. This is a shame, but as the kindle is very convenient. However, the poetry and energy of Flaubert's writing comes through much better in the other translations. Trust me; you'll be glad you paid more for the print copy.

A Metatext
By Bruce Kendall
This is a work that should not be neglected by those interested in Flaubert or by lovers of French Literature. It's format resembles an old-fashioned cyclorama, which was basically a revolving canvas, portraying various interpretive images to an audience that would be seated in the middle of a room. Or it may recall the same period's "magic lantern" which would produce a similar effect, projecting a series of images on a flat wall, the precursor of modern cinema.
Flaubert ushered in an entirely new sensibility to the world of letters. He reinvented the concept of the literary artist as word-and world shaper. The word is the world and vice-versa. No writer ever engaged in such a Herculean struggle to shape every word, every sentence, every image, every assonance or consonance to perfectly conform to his intention.
Flaubert engaged in a kind of ascetisism his entire adult life, which is hardly news, but is central to an understanding of this work and to his attraction towards St. Anthony for a protagonist. Flaubert was for many years a kind of hermit in his study at Croisset, where he retired to his study to read books and write novels. He had contact with his mother and adopted niece and wrote letters to a mistress (Louise Collet, and later to George Sand) along with a few male friends. He would make brief sojourns into Paris, but for the most part, stayed to himself in his provincial hideaway. What he dreamt of there, besides his most famous works (Madame Bovary and L'Education Sentimentale) were reveries such as this novel and Salammbo, another book set in the Near-East and equally evocative in terms of his treatment of that region's sensual and Byzantine richness.
"The Temptation" sparkles with some of Flaubert's most carefully and lovingly constructed imagery. It is the author's own homage to the fertility of his imagination. He never fathered a child literally that we know of, but this work and Salammbo were his ways of saying that he was fertile in all other respects. Each passing personage or creature is a seed sewn by this father of imagery.
One of the most senseless and ill-informed utterances in the annals of criticism is Proust's comment that Flaubert never created one memorable metaphor. Flaubert's entire cannon is one vast metaphor. They are evident in every sentence and every passage of every novel he ever wrote. This is particularly true in this work, as any informed reader will no doubt conclude after reading it.
One other area of recommendation extends to students of Gnosticism. Flaubert encapsulates much of the central theories of the early Gnostic Fathers and Apostles in a few well-delineated characterisations and brush strokes. I would also recommend the Penguin edition, edited and translated by Kitty Mrosovsky, for her introduction and notes. The only drawback I have with her is that she portrays Henry James as denigrating Flaubert's work, where in fact he generally effusively praises it. To those who can read it in its original text, I can only say I envy you and wish I were there.

Siteless: 1001 Building Forms, by François Blanciak

Some may call it the first manifesto of the twenty-first century, for it lays down a new way to think about architecture. Others may think of it as the last architectural treatise, for it provides a discursive container for ideas that would otherwise be lost. Whatever genre it belongs to, SITELESS is a new kind of architecture book that seems to have come out of nowhere. Its author, a young French architect practicing in Tokyo, admits he "didn't do this out of reverence toward architecture, but rather out of a profound boredom with the discipline, as a sort of compulsive reaction." What would happen if architects liberated their minds from the constraints of site, program, and budget? he asks. The result is a book that is saturated with forms, and as free of words as any architecture book the MIT Press has ever published.

The 1001 building forms in SITELESS include structural parasites, chain link towers, ball bearing floors, corrugated corners, exponential balconies, radial facades, crawling frames, forensic housing -- and other architectural ideas that may require construction techniques not yet developed and a relation to gravity not yet achieved. SITELESS presents an open-ended compendium of visual ideas for the architectural imagination to draw from. The forms, drawn freehand (to avoid software-specific shapes) but from a constant viewing angle, are presented twelve to a page, with no scale, order, or end to the series. After setting down 1001 forms in siteless conditions and embryonic stages, Blanciak takes one of the forms and performs a "scale test," showing what happens when one of these fantastic ideas is subjected to the actual constraints of a site in central Tokyo. The book ends by illustrating the potential of these shapes to morph into actual building proportions.

Review

Imagine Learning from Las Vegas as illustrated by Chris Ware, and you'll get a sense of Franois Blanciak's marvelously inventive new book.

(Metropolis)

In Siteless: 1001 Building Forms, French architect Franois Blanciak surrenders the usual anchors of function and site for an exercise in pure form. His astoundingly imaginative 1,001 designs could challenge architects and engineers for decades.

To the magic of architectural creativity
By Tor O. Austigard
To claim this book just adds to the general tendency of contemporary architecture seeking the immediately shocking, superficial and easily publishable is perhaps a sign of precisely this tendency: people losing the ability to dwell on things long enough for their imagination to come out.

Once applied on actual architecture these concepts would need to be closely linked to program, scale and site to be interesting. However in the initial program-, scale- and siteless condition they are presented in this book, they evoke intense imagination in me. The sketches being hand drawn also adds to this.

You can be impatient and flip through it in five minutes, or you can focus your attention and find the potential and depth these forms have.

Anyway, diverging criticism and provocation is usually a sign of quality.

Extremely helpful if your stuck in the design process
By NZarch
I would recommend this book to anybody who sometimes struggles with coming up with new ideas or often gets stuck in the design process.. I often flick through this book for inspiration or ideas. The forms inside do not necessarily need to be replicated, but can often lead to developments in your own ideas.

A really helpful, small book that should be kept in any architecture students backpack

A highly creative book
By Natrick Pickels
I am not an architect but I am fascinated by the multiple varieties of shapes in this book. I can literally dive into this imaginative world.
The architectural context seems to give the work some kind of
justification, which is not needed. It is a fine piece of art all by
itself.
It makes a good present as well, as the price is very reasonable, and can be a source of inspiration not only for architects but also for artists (I personally intend to offer it to a friend who is a wood sculptor). I think this book is an appealing work for all kinds of creative people.

An amazing guide to save serious money
By Jamie
This book was a life saver when I went to Vegas this past week! I would have been the dumb (and broke!) tourist pissing everyone off if I hadn't read this one. The tips are concise and to the point, which I appreciate. All of Jacobs rules are sound and worked like a charm when I used them, and actually I got a very rare extra treat because of them (I'm smiling big time as I write this.) If you're going to Vegas, do yourself a favor and buy this book.
