Fun steamy read
By Elletra
I decided to check out Hotel Desires because the plot seemed fun and interesting. I am glad that I did. I have never read an erotic tale so intriguing. The character development was great and the scenes were so descriptive you basically felt like you were in the hotel with them. The passion between the two main characters is insanely intense and definitely got my heart racing on more than one occasion throughout this book. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun erotic read with a great plot.

Off-Beat Fun
By Sparta
A step-mom and son stop at a creepy hotel in the middle of no-where and find there is magic at work. An off-beat fantasy were lust builds for no apparent reason. I enjoyed the short-story, which is sort of an urban tale; it's no different than thinking werewolves or vampires (none in the story).

I liked the cover art and it sucked me in to an enjoyable tale.

Five stars isn't enough For this book
By H.K.
I've been a self emplyed remodeling contractor for 10 years. I've read lots of business books. This one is, in my humble opinion, one of the best.
In "How Much Should I Charge" Ellen Rohr explains the folly of setting a price for your professional services based on the going rate (what others are charging for similar services).
Quoting business sage Frank Blau, she makes the point that being "Busy is easy. Profitability is difficult. And there is only one way to be profitable. Charge more for your services than it costs to create them."
Yeah, it's a basic point, but do you know what YOUR break-even cost per hour is? I didn't either, and that's a common problem in the service trades. If you don't know your costs of being in business, how can you determine a realistic price for your services? A price that allows you to get ahead, not just tread water.
In this book Ellen tells you how to create a selling price based on real numbers. She explains things like overhead and budgets and profit and billable hours and all of that. And the really commendable thing about it is that she manages to present all of this information in an entertaining, easy-to-read maner. There is a lot of rock solid common sense and fundamental business wisdom here and it's not boring or hard to follow like in so many other business books.
You can't read this book without being challenged to reevaluate the approach you take to pricing your services. For most service professionals, that's a reevaluation that is sorely needed.
In short, Ellen's excellent book tells you how to take control of your business; to get in the drivers seat and take it where you want it to go based on real costs of doing business, your own special talents as a service professional, and your own personal goals and dreams in life.
I'd like to share one particularly poignant passage from the book. It is profound. It is true. It's something I can relate to.
"Add up all the real costs of running a business. And charge a selling price that will cover all those costs plus generate a solid double-digit profit for the company. Don't sacrifice everything for the sake of keeping your prices low. Because, when you compromise yourself and your family's well being for the sake of your customer's wallet, something nasty happens. You start treating your customers like dirt.
When you make a great living doing the wonderful work that you do, somethiing marvelous happens; you treat your customers like gold! You thank them for providing you with such a nice living. You go out of your way to do nice things for them."
Some people will find what Ellen says about pricing to be provocative. Some will argue that her system can't work in their business or their area, or whatever. These are the people who equate "busy" with success, but who, despite their busyness never seem to get ahead financially like they would like (and should).
The fact is, Ellen's approach can and does work. I'll vouch for it. And I know there are successful service professionals all over the nation who will vouch for it. To succeed in business without a firm understanding and application of Ellen's pricing principles would be sheer luck.
I'll close with another quote from the book:
"Until YOU change, nothing will change for you"
Get the book. You'll be glad you did.

Funny reading, easy to understand, and super results!
By J&G
I have been reading several books on the science/art of pricing products and services. I actually ordered this book by mistake. (Sorry Ellen!) The cover made me think it was too goofy, to "entry level" for me. After all, I have been in the consulting business for years. But, I could not put the book down. It took me less than a day to get through the book and the exercises Ms. Rohr included. The manner in which this book is written, a story of a lady interested in starting a business and talking with her business savvy friend, is fantastic. By the time I was done my jaw was on the floor. I was astonished to see the true cost of running my business laid out before me. Figuring out my "break-even point" was a real eye opener and has drastically affected the rates I now charge for my services. The value of this book to anyone struggling to effectively price their goods or services will far outway the cost. The information Ms. Rohr provides can be applied to any industry / business.

A must for all creative people trying to make a living.
By G. Sellers
Wow !! Finally a helpful book. Being a potter and making each item by hand has always caused me to ask "How much should I charge?". After years of searching for help in this area I came across this wonderful book. Those with MBA's may not need this book, but those of us with BFA's, MFA"s and just plain creative talents will find this book very educational. Ellen's easy reading style and logical approach to pricing makes this book a "must have". Many myths about pricing are pointed out, like charging what every one else does or what the market will bear. If I am to make a living creating handmade items it is important to identify my customer and realize I am not competing with mass produced products. Thank you Ellen for putting me on the road to profitablity.

The Ocean at Home: An Illustrated History of the Aquarium, by Bernd Brunner

The mysterious world beneath the ocean’s surface and its inhabitants have captivated humanity for centuries—the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and ancient Chinese all kept fish in their homes to observe and admire. But it was not until the nineteenth-century invention of the aquarium that the deep was truly domesticated, offering the curious a chance to create an indoor exotic sea world, in miniature.

In The Ocean at Home, Bernd Brunner traces the development of the aquarium from the Victorian era to the present day. Along the way, in this fascinating history, Brunner provides insight into the cultural and social circumstances that accompanied the aquarium’s swift rise in popularity. Brunner tells a compelling story of obsession, discovery, and delight—from the aquarium’s origin as a tool for scientific observation to the Victorian era’s elaborately decorated containers of curiosity, to the great public aquariums that are popular in cities around the world today.

Featuring more than 100 illustrations, this updated edition of The Ocean at Home offers a colorful and captivating look at how a Victorian obsession still enchants many today. Both the owner of a humble goldfish bowl and the dazzled spectator at major public aquariums will find The Ocean at Home an appealing and knowledgable guide to the aquatic worlds we create.

“A fascinating book.”—San Francisco Chronicle, on the first edition

 (San Francisco Chronicle)

“Brunner does plenty to arouse interest and appreciation of this history in his well-paced and surprisingly pleasing book.” —Seattle Times, on the first edition

 (Seattle Times)

“[Brunner’s] cultured but unpretentious style carries with it a real sense of the Victorian drawing room, an impression reinforced by the wealth of contemporary engravings he has chosen to illustrate his text.”—Times Literary Supplement, on the first edition

 (TLS)

“Who knew that the 1970s staple began as Victorian England exotica?” (Los Angeles Times Jacket Copy)

“The aquarium is a microcosm of the sea, a bit of the ocean scooped up into our living rooms. Bernd Brunner’s slim but fascinating and beautifully illustrated book sets out to explore the history of this phenomenon, which he memorably describes as ‘Noah’s ark in reverse.’ In the process, Brunner, a German writer of measured, slyly humorous tones, reveals much about how we relate to our greater environment.” (Telegraph)

“The Ocean at Home beautifully fills an important gap in social as well as in natural history.”

Love this book, fascinating!
By CapyBoppy
I would give this book 5 stars except that the reproduction quality (and in many cases the size) of the images is not that great. Which is a shame, since they are potentially such amazing, interesting images, and many of them. Fascinating history of the aquarium, awesome book for underwater-life (and Victorian era) geeks like me. I often turn to this book to get inspiration for my art. If only the images were sharper... sigh.

Why this book may belong in your library and should be read and referenced
By Joseph Morgan
As one of fewer than 50 physicians in the US certified in cannabinoid medicine by the Amer Assoc of Cannabinoid Medicine, I recommend this book to physicians, other health care professionals, policy makers, and patients. This book summarizes and communicates the state of the art of cannabis medicine as of roughly early 2013. It is much easier to read and in many ways more practical than such academic books as "Marijuana and Cannabinoid Research: Methods and Protocols" edited by Prof. Emmanuel Onaivi (whose work is advancing knowledge of the CB2 receptor in the CNS) or "Cannabinoids in Nature and Medicine edited by Didier Lambert. Backes' book bridges and updates the clinical knowledge in the aforementioned books as well as less academic and non academic books including multiple chapter authors in "The Pot Book" by Julia Holland or Martin Lee's Smoke Signals, and Irv Rosenfelds's classic, "My Medicine," respectively.

The use of Medical cannabis in the USA goes back to the pre Civil War era, as reprinted in the late Dr Todd Mikuriya's "Medical Marijuana Papers", pre-WW1 medical and pharmacy textbooks, and summarized by Dr David Bearman in "Demons, Discrimination, and Dollars" (and expanded upon his soon to be published illustrated .much expanded version.

As the unscientific, politically motivated stigmas, and legal status of Cannabis-based medicine is rapidly changing, this book and others should be considered essential reading by those who care for those who suffer, those who believe that people ought to not be criminalized for growing a handful of medicinal plants to treat insomnia, neuropathic and other types of chronic pain, reduce opiate use, alcoholic cravings, PTSD, traumatic brain injury/stroke/cardiac ischemia/reperfusion injuries, (search pubmed for research by Prof Yosef Sarne), and enhance feelings of well-being.

Backes discusses the importance of the US federal patent, "Cannabinoids as Antioxidants and Neuroprotectants", cannabidiol (CBD), other emerging cannabinoids: THCA, THCV, CBN, GBG, CBD, CBDA, and CBDV, and a few terpenes.

An omission includes the implications on benefits and risks by the confounding of much marijuana, including literature assessments by undocumented and underdocumented contamination of smoked or ingested plan by pesticides, other chemicals, fungi, and bacteria.(Reference www.thewercshop.com and the scientific presentations by organic chemist Jeff Raber)

About me: A semi-retired physician who has spent the bulk of my career as a drug safety expert and clinical researcher in the pharmaceutical industry, I am looking to license my submitted patent application for use of the plant and/or isolated cannabinoids to treat nerve agent neurotoxicity: "Use of Cannabinoids and terpenes for the treatment of organophosphate toxicity" Attention VC: based on the rules of the
FDA's CounterACT program, my patent meets the criteria be developed into a FDA-approved drug without costly and time-consuming human trials!

Info on therapeutic use of cannabinoids and terpenes in this book should be updated every couple of years as practical cannabinoid medicine is advancing rapidly on the west coast USA, in Israel (thanks to the pioneering work in the endocannabinoid system by Prof R. Mechoulam), Spain, Scotland, Uruguay, in Canada, and in England (thanks to GW Pharma), and indeed all over the world where science, a true doctor/patient relationship, and medicinal plant research are permitted.

Extremely helpful guide to using Cannabis medicinally
By Scarlett
I purchased this book as I have a family member who has been suffering from Osteoporosis. Traditional pain killers have not been effective and/or are too strong and/or have other unpleasant side affects, so was hoping this book would teach me more about how to effectively use cannabis to help manage pain.

I found the book smart, well-written and informative. I would suggest this book to people with medical problems where traditional methods of managing pain (and other things) have failed, or those who would rather pursue a more natural route.

Fact/Science Based information for those new to Medical Cannabis
By MMJ Refugee
Being a 2014 release, this has some of the most up-to-date information about the medicinal applications of cannabis, in spite of the fact that even more information has been released since the final edit of this book.

The book is not cut up into a bunch of chapters, but four loosely defined “Parts”.

In Part 1, you get a conglomeration of cannabis history and biology, but quickly switches up into how cannabinoids work in the body and how they even interact with some prescribed and over-the-counter medications. A good explanation of terpenes and how they augment the affects of the cannabis in the body is here too. Possibly the best book dealing with the “adverse effects” of short-term and long-term use, along with a good few paragraphs about “over-medication” or that bad trip.

Part 2 is interesting in its own right. It is titled, “Using Medical Cannabis”, and goes through all the basics that a newbie would have to figure out on their own. Short of having an experienced user to guide you, this is practically the next best thing. Good few pages on contaminants, pesticides, and other adulterants, particularly useful for underground users depending on an unregulated black market for their medicine.

“Varieties of Medical Cannabis”, Part 3 is a complete section on common strains and what they are used for. If I have a complaint, it is with this section. Many of the strains mentioned are all old standbys. With all the creative crosses and private grows, you find many non-name and designer strains being used in the medical cannabis community. More information about that, crossed with the terpene section, would have been best to allow a nuanced understanding of how that is linked. You are left to extrapolate everything on your own.

Part 4 is where the major component and value of this book comes in, with the “Medical Uses of Cannabis”. This is a fairly comprehensive list of varioius ailments and medical conditions that are treated with medicinal cannabis and the corresponding strains good for those specific conditions. This covers many of the new hot-button studies recently covering anxiety, Alzheimer’s, autism, fibromyalgia, Hep C, MS, Parkinson’s, and PTSD.

If you have a family member that is looking for good science based information on using cannabis medicinally, this is a fantastic primer.

Most of the information is out there on the internet, but you have to put the pieces together. This is all packaged for you in an easy to read, casual format.

Review

"Long overdue, Layli Phillips' The Womanist Reader is a pioneering text that illuminates the genealogy of womanism and its complex meanings. Phillips' articulation of its connections with and departures from both ‘feminism’ and ‘black feminism’ is cogent and provocative. This anthology lays the groundwork for future scholarship on this little understood analytic construct, but critically important intervention in the broad project of social justice."
―Beverly Guy-Sheftall, editor of Words of Fire: An Anthology of African American Feminist Thought and Director of the Women's Center, Spelman College

"Bringing together many groundbreaking articulations of womanist thought, Layli Philips has assembled a superb collection. The Womanist Reader is essential reading for womanists, feminists, activists, and scholars in many disciplines, including women’s studies, Africana studies, African-American Studies, ethnic studies, and American Studies."
―AnaLouise Keating, coeditor of this bridge we call home and Professor of Women’s Studies, Texas Woman's University

"This important reader is a theoretical and methodological breakthrough in our understanding of womanist scholarship from a wide array of disciplines. This is essential reading that highlights the contributions of womanism to gender theory and praxis."

―Filomina Steady, editor of The Black Woman Cross-Culturally and Professor and Chair of Africana Studies, Wellesley College

"Layli Phillips' comprehensive anthology is a much-needed reader for today and for generations to come. The Womanist Reader chronicles twenty-five years of juxtapositioned insights and empoweringrevelations by womanists across the disciplines."

―Katie G. Cannon, author of Katie's Canon: Womanism and the Soul of the Black Community

Sourcebook : contemporary Africana women's intropective and worldview.
By Greer C. Ifatoki-sillah
The Womanist Reader is an excellent compendium of contemporary womanist scholars and theorists' worldview as women. The sources and viewpoints are vaied, i.e. from several diciplines and universities. The articles would be difficult to access, if Dr. Phillips had not mined and collected them for this compendium.

This volume is absolutely necessary for any contemporary woman of African descent who's looking to enhance/enlarge her views on the roles of Africana women in the 21st century.

Amazon.com Review
From the Author: Hide & Seek Inspiration:

Visitors to the d.school frequently ask us where we find inspiration for the spaces we design. Here are a few places we look:

-- Retail Experiences

Restaurants, Hotels, & Stores
Restaurants & boutique hotel lobbies are almost unparalleled in the moods they create. Retail stores are full of display implementations that can be co-opted for display of creative work.

Specialty Hardware Retailers
Marine hardware outlets, antique hardware stores, and industrial kitchen suppliers stock all manner of novel gadgets to inspire new possibilities.

-- Public Gathering Places

Parks & Playgrounds
Endless interactions of all sorts occur in these spaces that provide insight into natural postures and the nuances of group interactions.

Airports & Parking Garages
Guiding travelers is a door-to-door experiment in designing way-finding. Parking garages in particular feature innovative uses of signage, color coding, and memory cues.

-- Places Where Things Are Made

Prep Kitchen & Food Trucks
Food prep is creative work that occurs under great time pressure. Cooks consitently invent ways to produce during the constraints of a mad dinner rush.

Sound Stages & Theaters
Sound stages are designed to support the realization of imagination. Everything about them is tuned to support the construction of novel designs.

-- Learning Environments

Museums & Galleries
Art is inspirational but so are the galleries themselves. Gallery spaces are constantly reconfigured to adapt for the needs of a show.

Pre-schools & Kindergartens
Learning environments for young kids are one of the few places where physicality is embraced -- kids love to move around. These spaces are also full of materials to engage in playful building activities.
-- Service Industries
Hospitals
Emergency rooms in particular are filled with clever solutions to coordinate action among staff and service the often complex emotional needs of patients.

Repair Shops
Bike mechanics, oil-change garages, tailors, and shoe repair shops all have unique tools & configurations for optimizing space, time, and money.

From the Inside Flap
make space is about creative spaces and about creating spaces. Space is more than just the physical environment.

Five types of content are mixed into the book.

Enter from whatever direction suits your needs:

tools
stuff to build

situations
quick, repeatable configurations

insights
ideas to consider

design template
a simple breakdown of how the properties of places can spark actions and attitudes in people

space studies
true stories about making space and living in it

The more than 100 mini-entries in this book will help you slice through this complexity and jump from inspiration to action: make an existing space more collaborative, conceive of new creative work spaces, and design learning environments from scratch.

This guiding content emerged from a five-year experiment at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford (aka the "d.school") and from continuous (but jovial) poking and prodding of countless students, faculty, visitors, and project partners.

Scott Doorley and Scott Witthoft are directors of the Environments Collaborative at Stanford University's d.school—the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design. With the d.school's support, they have prepared make space as a tool for everyone interested in designing and creating environments to support creative collaboration.

Scott Doorley's work focuses on how physical context and digital media can benefit human experience.

His installations with the Dacha Art Collective have been exhibited in the San Jose Museum of Art and the Gray Area Foundation for the Arts San Francisco. Currently he is the Creative Director at the Stanford d.school, where he teaches classes in subjects at the intersection of design and media arts: storytelling and visual communication, improv, and digital media.

Scott has degrees in film from the University of California, Los Angeles (BA '96) and learning, design, and technology from Stanford University (MA '06).

Creative space projects you can start on right now
By Celeste Thoms
Completely not what I expected to read, and that's a good thing. This book acts more like an instruction and construction book to creating the space that you work in. This is a book you pick up and start building the right space immediately. There are so many creative ideas about creating a space that encourages creativity, productiveness, organization, and collaboration. It's not just for businesses with large teams, I've found a lot of useful ways to organize my space when I'm working on a project alone and it's nice because you don't need a construction team to create spaces in your work space. These are projects you can implement on your own by just taking a trip to home depot. There is nothing like this book around that I've seen, I've absolutely loved it.

Some good ideas, but I don't actually want to work in any of these spaces
By Esther Schindler
My job as writer-and-editor shifts from internally creative (I work inside my head) to actively collaborative (talk with the writers who work for me, learn what my clients want). I work with people all over the world from the comfort of my home office, and I depend on the wonderfulness of instant messaging, shared online storage, and e-mail. I prefer my quietly creative cocoon in which to do my thinking and lure the muse (Here kitty kitty... Well, the muse doesn't come when I call either). Yet, I'm inherently an extrovert. I love to go into create-mode with other people, so every time I've had the opportunity to visit the Home Office (for clients or employers, as the case may be) I actively notice how well their space is designed. How much does the office encourage people to work together? How does it help people to focus when they need to work alone?

As a result, when I saw Make Space on my list of Amazon Vine options, I was attracted to its premise: "an inspiring guidebook filled with ways to alter space to fuel creative work and foster collaboration." I love its goal. Its execution... not so much.

The book comes from the "d school" at Stanford University, and perhaps that academic background colors the way they think of colloborative space. The book has a few sorts of information: tools (stuff to build), situations (such as easy-to-reorganize spaces... think "use beanbag chairs draw people into a circle"), case studies. A section on the "design template" identifies the elements that go into a shared place, what they call "breaking down this spatial grammar into manageable bits" such as the actions that will take place there, the importance of thresholds and transitions, the need for everyone to have a "home base."

The best part of the book are the tools: do-it-yourself inexpensive projects to create reusable objects that a team can use and move around. A "flip stool" can be flipped from an upright perch to a low bench. You're encouraged to create whiteboard sliders using dry-erase boards mounted on a trolley to instantly create partitions. Create a defined space (such as "where to keep everyone's bikes") using carpet tile or tape.

Some of the "situations" advice is useful food-for-thought, such as "The more flexible a space is, the more some things need to stay fixed. It is especially important to keep community tools (copiers, shared computers) and amenities (food, supplies) in prominent and fixed locations." But don't expect any advice about where to put the server room; there's not much for the geeks who have to think about wiring diagrams.

The authors like big cavernous rooms, I think, which are divided into smaller units... while I truly and passionately hate anything that looks like a cube farm. Maybe it's the effect of the startup communities near Stanford, but most of the designs shown are loft-like with moveable walls of one kind or another. There are a lot of hard edges; if they had a suggestion to hang quilts or other homey stuff in a conference area to relax people, I didn't see it.

In short: I didn't see a single space that appealed to me. (Please, just surround me with books. That's what inspires me, and it offers sound deadening as well.)

In case you couldn't tell by now, I didn't find this book especially inspirational. And I had to subtract an entire star for its oh-so-artsy layout, fonts, and colors which make the text almost wholly unreadable. White and black text on a dark blue or fuchsia background? Sheesh. I didn't like the flow of the book, either. At first I gave it the benefit of the doubt because, I thought, it's meant to be read in short inspirational bursts. But there's no narrative, no entry point or path for me as a creative designer.

But I'm not sure if my advice is useful to you. Maybe my opinion is affected by my preference for my solo writer-cave and my conscious preference to interact with people primarily in TCP/IP packets. But for myself... this book is okay. I hoped for more.

This book is literally a feast for your eyes with a lot of ideas and information that will inspire you!
By [KNDY] Dennis A. Amith
Prepare to be inspired!

Scott Dorley and Scott Witthoft (Directors of the Environments Collaborative at Stanford University's d. school - the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design) have written a book titled "make space" which is about designing and creating environments to support creative collaboration.

Although I am not an architect, engineer nor do I build a lot of objects, I am a designer (digital and print) but I do appreciate space and the creativity of those who can take advantage of it. And even I have had ideas of wanting to experiment with my own creativity for surrounding space around my home.

And as I was reading this book, there is this sense of enthusiasm and knowledge that Dorley and Witthoft shares with the reader but also backs it up with photos of people who attend d. school using the techniques taught and showing the reader examples of how they were built, why and a picture of how that creativity was applied to a business setting.

The five types of content mixed into the book are tools (stuff to build), situations (quick, repeatable configurations), insights (ideas to consider), design template (a simple breakdown of how the properties of places can spark actions and attitudes in people) and space studies (true stories about making space and living in it).

Included are more than 100 mini-entries that can be read in any way a reader likes. So, you can jump chapters or pages and use this book as a creative and idea resource.

JUDGMENT CALL:

Although the majority of what I design is for print, "make space" is one of those books that made me feel, "Arghh... I wish my university had these type of classes" because after reading this book, I was very inspired. There is no denying that the students at d. school are really given the opportunity to challenge themselves and apply their creativity towards space.

For me, being a guy and having known many guys who have a lot of clutter, as I get older, I'm starting to become tired of it. In fact, sometimes I spend a lot of time looking at magazines or pictures online to see how people utilize space, may it be in the kitchen, my bookshelves, to achieve better organization, more space with creativity.

And when I saw this book and read the info. on Amazon, I had to give this book a try!

There are so many entries with information, instructions and even addresses/phone numbers of companies of where to get material. For example, one instructional section on "see-through walls" for writing was pretty cool, but where to get polycarbonate? No problem, they provide you with the source info. of where to find these. Granted, a lot of these are in the Bay Area near Stanford University but for others, you can easily do a search online for a company near you.

The book is also well-designed. Vibrant colors and photos are featured. A plethora of information but not written to academically where you get bored. This book is literally a feast for your eyes with a lot of ideas and information that will inspire you!

Here is quote from the book that I found myself looking at quite often:

"Use space to nudge culture, not to shove it. We make space and space makes us. This theme is woven throughout this book. Space has the capacity to change culture, but there is a limit."

Overall, as you can see from the majority of the reviewers on Amazon, I also have to agree that this book was not only a pleasant surprise, it's fantastic! And not only have I been inspired, it also has made me want to go out and experiment with building or trying out the many examples featured.

"make space" is definitely recommended!

You cannot miss with Loren Eiseley
By A Customer
I think every book this man ever wrote is a masterpiece. His style is thoughtful, haunting, and beautiful. They are all good. Theodosius Dobzhansky described him as "...a Proust miraculously turned into an evolutionary anthropologist..." and Ray Bradbury wrote glowing reviews of many of his books including this one.
Here he writes from a naturalist's perspective on the unexpected and symbloic aspects of the universe. Read about seeds, heiroglyphs on shells, the Ice Age, lost tombs, city dumps and primative Man. The underlying theme is the desolation and renewal of our planet's history and experience.

Somber essays from an outstanding writer
By Shawn Moses
Loren Eiseley's dark, brooding prose is unique in the annals of nature writing. "The Unexpected Universe" features some of what are considered Eiseley's best essays. Heavily autobiographical and deeply personal, these essays are not cheerful ramblings on the joy of communing with nature. They are bleak, lonely musings on the human condition. Sometimes, Eisely's scholarly style gets the best of him - his penchant for expounding upon the works of obscure authors taints some of his work with a pompous air. But his best moments more than make up for his bad ones. Eiseley's universe can be profound, ethereal, and dreamlike. Life, Eisely shows, is a journey of discovery filled with moments of awe, fear and sorrow, and occasionally, even with moments of joy. His writings rekindle our sense of wonder for a universe whose intricacies and secrets extend far beyond the boundaries of human understanding.

A moving meditation by a deeply poetic observer of the natural world
By Shalom Freedman
There are a number of writers of works for the general public on scientific subjects ( Oliver Sachs, Lewis Thomas, Alan Lightman come first to mind) who in exploring their subjects provide profound and poetic insight into human nature and the human situation. Eiseley is such a writer also , and at times he writes passages of exquisite beauty. He often takes off from his own personal observation and in the course of reflection teaches truths about the natural world and the overall development of mankind.
He is no naive optimist and his brilliant essay in this volume comparing two of his great naturalist heroes, Darwin and Thoreau he speaks about the cruel and wasteful sides of the natural world. Even more he emphasizes the surprises the close observer of the natural world is often confronted by, the 'Unexpected Universe' of his title. Eiseley sees the mystery that is constantly the byproduct of close observation of nature.

"The evolution of a lifeless planet eventually culminates in green leaves. The altered and oxygenated air hanging above the continents presently invites the rise of animal apparitions compounded of formerly inert clay.
Only after long observation does the sophisticated eye succeed in labeling these events as natural rather than miraculous. There frequently lingers about them a penumbral air of mystery not easily dispersed. We seem to know much, yet we frequently find ourselves baffled.Humanity itself constitutes such a mystery, for our species arose and spread in a time of great extinctions. We are the final product of the Pleistocene period's millenial winters, whose origin is still debated. Our knowledge of this ice age is only a little over a century old, and the time of its complete acceptance even less. Illiterate man has lost the memory of that huge snowfall from whose depths he has emerged blinking."

In this context many of the best passages of this book relate to Eiseley's musings on prehistoric life and development of mankind. Some might find in this emphasis a hindrance to religious faith, but in one exceptionally telling passage of the book he shows the kind of friendly connection between scientific observation and religious faith which many of us would like to affirm.
"It is not sufficient any longer to listen at the end of a wire to the rustlings of the galaxies;it is not enough even to examine the great coil of DNA in which is coded the very alphabet of life. These are our extended perceptions. But beyond lies the great darkness of the ultimate Dreamer, who dreamed the light and the galaxies. Before act was, or substance existed, imagination grew in the dark. Man partakes of that ultimate wonder and creativeness. As we turn from the galaxies to the swarming cells of our own being, which toil for something , some entity beyond their grasp, let us remember man, the self- fabricator who came across an ice age to look into the mirrors and the magic of science. Surely he did not come to see himself or his wild visage only. He came because he is at heart a listener and search for some transcendent realm beyond himself."
