About the Author
A native of Australia, Geoffrey E. Mills received his Diploma of Teaching, Bachelors of Education, and Masters of Education from Curtin University of Technology (Perth, Australia) and was an elementary teacher in “the bush” and the city of Perth before moving to the USA in 1986 to undertake doctoral studies at the University of Oregon. After completing his doctorate, Geoff accepted his first professorial position at Southern Oregon State College (now Southern Oregon University). After 12 years of teaching, Geoff moved into university administration and is now in his eleventh year as Dean and Professor of Education in the School of Education at Southern Oregon University. Geoff has traveled extensively and has given invited research presentations in Australia, New Zealand, Greenland (where he is currently an adjunct professor at the University of Greenland), United Kingdom, Canada, and many states in the US. Geoff us perhaps is best known for this textbook and his other textbook Action Research: A Guide for the Teacher Researcher (now in its 4th edition). Geoff’s wife Donna is also a professor at Southern Oregon University, and their only child, Jonathan, will be a college freshman starting in fall, 2011. Geoff and Donna live in Oregon and continue to teach at Southern Oregon University, but also spend considerable time each year in Australia.

The only book you will ever need

I sure wish my professors had recommended this book during the first 3 years of my doctoral studies. The required texts were confusing and useless. As I prepared to begin my dissertation research I felt totally unsure as to how to organize my data . . . this text answered all my questions in a simple straight foward method. It is the only book you will need for any educational research. It saved me time and my sanity. If you're in a masters or doctoral program get this book. You won't be sorry.

Easy Read

I bought the Kindle edition of this book for a course on Educational Research. I do not enjoy reading but this book is interesting and easy to read. The Kindle Edition appears to be lacking in some respects since you can not go directly to the Table of Contents or the beginning of the book. There is, however, a document navigation (under View) and a search option and you can view your bookmarks and highlights. The document navigation will take you directly to each area of the book including the index. Clicking on a name in the index will also take you to the appropriate area of the book.

Good introductory text

Although the authors refer to this text as being for undergraduate students, it does work well in our graduate programs. With most of our students having very limited (if any) formal research background, we were looking for a text which approached things from a perspective that was informative yet easy-to-follow. This text has good structure, and the order in which material is presented is very much aligned with the actual process of conducting research. My only issue with the book is that they approach the Review of Literature as a subsection of Chapter 1 in the research proposal, when nearly every thesis or dissertation has the Review of Literature as an entirely different chapter. The method approached by the text is typical with some research manuscripts for journal publication, but not necessarily for the actual research proposal. I have utilized the 8th & 9th versions of this text in previous years, and have found the updates made in the 10th edition to be very well done. A bit deceiving by the cover, this book is valid for all educational programs (not just those that are K-12 related). The supplemental materials (specifically the online Blackboard-compatible exams) are a big help, as this course is extremely time consuming to teach/facilitate. I highly recommend this text.
