This book is written by the author who made RSPICE. In this book, he explains the inner workings of SPICE and what those strange spice parameters(such as ITL1, ITL2...)mean. I can say I understand and use SPICE much better because of this book. Highly recommendable!

Irony and Byron

While reading the book I thought that it would have been better to have titled it, "How Byron and the Romantics Understood and Used Irony (with guest appearances by other writers and theorists)," but I realized even then that this waif-like book cover couldn't support such a hefty (and unwieldy) moniker. It seemed, at times, that Colebrook was rehearsing an upcoming book on Byron because she seemed to dedicate much of the page length to examining the seminal texts on Byron's use of irony and/or satire. On a more serious note, the book does cover the rise of irony and also explains--mostly well, I suppose--how different theorists/philosophers have understood irony, but the Romantics are the stars here, folks. I also thought--especially just after finishing Contingency, Irony and Solidarity--that Richard Rorty got short shrift from Colebrook. I was also surprised-- being a fan of the man--that Wayne Booth's ideas on irony were not showcased more (and to my mind, it's Booth who argues about the community that irony creates, not Rorty, but I could be mistaken). I will add that for such a small book, its
project is quite expansive, so I would recommend it to anyone looking for a deeper understanding of this complex topic. I also liked that Colebrook brought in Deleuze towards the close as I haven't read much that the man has written, but he seems to be gaining currency in Academia these days. Irony, it's not just for hipsters.

Best book on irony

This is the best book-length overview of irony I have come across. Colebrook manages to be both succinct and wide-ranging, providing synopses of theories of irony since Classical times. She covers a lot of territory yet her explanations are never simplistic. What a brilliant accomplishment to explain such a broad trope/concept as irony, without losing sight of its complexities--all in under 200 pages! Colebrook writes on philosophers and poets and is impressive in her knowledge of both.

Great introductory text

Claire Colebrook's contribution to the Routledge "New Critical Idiom" series is on Irony, and series editor John Drakakis should be commended for selecting her. Professor Colebrook provides college students studying philosophy, English literature, or literary criticism with a clearly delineated introductory guide to the concept of irony. Her study covers irony from the time of Socrates on through postmodernism. One comes away from each chapter with a sense of assurance that the sophisticated ideas have been aptly explained, particularly for an introductory text. This does not mean that one would appreciate the clarity and concision of Professor Colebrook's writing without having engaged with some of Plato's Socratic dialogues and, to a much greater degree, the work of postmodern thinkers like Jacques Derrida and Gilles Deleuze. In one of the more interesting sections of the book, Colebrook applies the concept of irony to the works of Byron, and from there explores identity politics through the alembic of irony and postmodernism. With Irony, Claire Colebrook succeeds in providing students with a perspicuously written introduction on a topic that's usual literary offerings either require a high-level of erudition or barely skim the surface of the concept.

Really nice

I picked up this book randomly, and are really glad that its really well written. The lead has quite a good chemistry going on and the supporting characters, including both the children have such distinct personality that you will really like them. The hero and heroine are written quite humanly (unlike most of the books of this genre). Really enjoying the story.

Before I start I note that this novel is also available as part of the Governess Brides Bundle, which if you have not read this book, An Unconventional Duenna, and Scandal and Miss Smith is a good buy.

I reread "A Very Unusual Governess" after reading it several years ago. The heroine and hero are very likeable. For different reasons both are without partners and both seem made for one another, though in normal circumstances they would not likely have met. The character development and writing is good. Having magic in a romance is not something I like, but it is used in a minor enough way that it did not bother me.

The romance is clean, but this fits in well with the story. This is a charming, low-stress romance.

Plot-driven, sexually charged, and very well written. If you're looking for something down and dirty, this is it. Lenore Love knows how to spin a hot and juicy tale!

I've been following Lenore for a while, now. All her stories are hot and well written. This one's no exception. Richie and Rachel are believable as steps lost in the swamp, and Alette is over the top as a salacious, manipulating bayou slut. The action is crazy-hot, and the plot ends with a bang. Worth every penny!

You had better be sitting down!

I used this book in a home bible study a few years back. The authors interpretation and consistant use of scripture keeps you grounded in God's word and not in man's opinion. What a blessing givin the number of "this is what I think" books on the shelves these days. No country goes into battle without first studying the tactics and history of their opponent. To not prepare with this information would be utter foolishness. "Seeing The Unseen" helps you to understand and prepare for the battle which every christian will engage in from the point of salvation untill God calls them home. This study can open up the eyes of the un-believer as well to the spiritual realm which envelopes us all. God is supernatural, as is His entire realm. We are sheltered here on earth in a natural state, blocked from the perception and understanding of the supernatural that scripture talks about. I encourage every christian to pick this one up. Learn what God, Jesus and the writers of the bible have told us about the lies and connivings of Satan and how he desires to make us "useless soldiers" in God's kingdom. Ryan knows discovery is inevitable and when the moment arrives, he has to dig deep to find the most graceful and honourable way of making his exit.

Gr 7-10-In Toronto during the 1990s, 14-year-old Ryan Waite and his alcoholic mom scrape by on the dole while awaiting his big break as an actor. He bombs an audition and is afraid to tell his mother when a shifty deal with a private investigator provides a way out. Ryan is hired to pretend to be the son of a wealthy man who is desperate to reconnect before he dies. With no Internet or Facebook to prove otherwise, Ryan passes himself off as Allen, the long-lost son. He doesn't expect to actually care about this new family in Halifax. The protagonist is a likable character, although he is rather naive. A day of reckoning will surely come, and when it does Ryan must confront his feelings and actions. Something Different from Author Blackwood

This latest book from Blackwood is a change from his usual action/adventure plots with historical or fantasy settings. In this nearly modern tale, set in 1990 Canada, he explores the quandary of a boy asked to use his acting skills not on stage, but to pull off a real life deceit. The themes of loyalty and honesty are common in Blackwood's books and some will find this modern setting for the themes an interesting departure from earlier books.
