Their brains are wired a bit differently, or they went through experiences in their lives that contributed to their introversion, social avoidance, and shyness. They may have been sensitive children who were neglected or abused, never encouraged to learn about the world around them. Their feelings may have been invalidated while they were young, so they learned to keep their emotions inside instead of sharing them with others around them. They learned to be self-sufficient instead of relying on others and on society for their needs.

This is good as far as it goes, but 17 pages for $3 isn't going very far. And really, it's more like 12 pages, because the last third is a "preview" of another book on obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. If this were $0.99, I'd probably give it two or three stars.

Assigned text for class, but enjoyed it so much I bought a copy

I was assigned this book as a text for a collection development class. I thought this book provided a very good foundation for the subject; it was clear, straightforward, and easy to read, with the 4 main types of libraries represented. I don't know that I would recommend it for someone who has years of experience in collection development, but if you're new to it, this is a great resource.

Best animal book for children of all ages!

This is an excellent animal information book and our grandchildren love it. We got it for the 3 year old's birthday and the 5 and 7 year old find it just as interesting. Many great photos, lots of facts and stories. Their Mom will be using it for home schooling reference too. It's a winner!

It is a place where corrupt politicians and drug lords live in luxury apartments, while the poorest prisoners are subjected to squalor and deprivation. Violence is a constant threat, and sections of San Pedro that echo with the sound of children by day house some of Bolivia's busiest cocaine laboratories by night. In San Pedro, cocaine--"Bolivian marching powder"--makes life bearable. Even the prison cat is addicted.

Yet Marching Powder is also the tale of friendship, a place where horror is countered by humor and cruelty and compassion can inhabit the same cell. This is cutting-edge travel-writing and a fascinating account of infiltration into the South American drug culture.

This memoir of a British drug dealer's nearly five years inside a Bolivian prison provides a unique window on a bizarre and corrupt world. McFadden, a young black man from Liverpool arrested for smuggling cocaine, finds himself forced to pay for his accommodations in La Paz's San Pedro Prison, the first of many oddities in a place where some inmates keep pets and rich criminals can sustain a lavish lifestyle. The charismatic McFadden soon learns how to survive, and even thrive, in an atmosphere where crooked prison officials turn up at his private cell to snort lines of coke. By chance, he stumbles on an additional source of income when he begins giving tours of the prison to foreign tourists, a trade that leads to the mention in a Lonely Planet guidebook that attracts the attention of his coauthor, Young, who was backpacking in South America at the time. McFadden's unapologetic self-serving story will attract little pity as he freely admits to countless cocaine sales for which he was never held accountable. Once the authors chronicle the novel aspects of life in San Pedro, from which McFadden was released in 2000, the narrative loses momentum. The book would have benefited from some judicious editing and some objective perspective on the veracity of McFadden's story.

Good book, intersting, makes you think...

Very easy and interesting read. Make you really wonder how this jail system works. Makes you want to visit Bolivia and see the country for yourself, to understand it from your own perspective as well. It is not entirely clear if every little detail is attached to reality but the general story seems to be candid and is very intersting. I would highly recommend.

Entailing and astonishing story

I heard about this book from some fellow travelers while in South America who were visitors to this prison. I am definitely glad I picked this book up, for it was an amazing story of an English drug trafficker getting locked up in the world's most mind boggling prison, at least that I know of. Once you read this book you'll be telling all of your friends about the crazy things that go on in this prison, and if you're a traveler you'll definitely put it on your list of things to see.
